Manchester United midfielder Paul Pogba is a “born leader” according to his France manager Didier Deschamps.
Pogba has enjoyed mixed fortunes when comparing his domestic form to that of his progress on the international stage.
His performances for the Old Trafford club have been inconsistent and, although his quality is there to be seen, his commitment and attitude have sometimes been questioned by those in and out of the Manchester club.
Pogba’s strained relationship with his club boss Jose Mourinho has been well-documented in the British media, with a move away from the club highlighted as a potential resolution to his problems.
However, Deschamps believes that Pogba is simply misunderstood and is in actual fact a true winner, leader and a man who will do his utmost to ensure his team reigns victorious come the end of the 90 minutes.
Pogba starred this summer for France as they claimed the Fifa World Cup trophy as their own in Russia, with Pogba scoring a delightful goal in their 4-2 final victory against Croatia.
Speaking at FIFA’s coaching conference (via AFP) Deschamps said: “The rest of the world had an image of Pogba which didn’t really reflect who he is.
“He’s always thinking about the collective. There is an image of him that he is very individualistic, a bit self-centred, but that’s not the true Paul at all.
“He prepared to win. He took on the mantle of leadership both on and off the pitch. He took on the role of spokesman, he can do that because he is a good speaker.
Paul Pogba has now provided 11 Premier League assists since the start of last season; Christian Eriksen (12), Leroy Sané (15) and Kevin De Bruyne (16) are the only players with more. pic.twitter.com/s8AMevdMnt

“You can be criticised, the press can be tough on you. Once you take that on board, I think you can become more calm. He has taken that on board and it has had an impact on him on and off the pitch.
“I think it gave him some respect, and that respect he has gained on the field has also had an impact on him as a person.”
Manchester United’s next fixtures
Mourinho, Pogba and company host Frank Lampard and his Derby County side this evening in the Football League Cup.
Following that, the Red Devils travel to West Ham on Saturday and can extend their unbeaten league run to four games.
