Jose Mourinho picks out best and worst Man Utd performers v West Ham

Manchester United manager Jose Mourinho has heaped praise on youngster Scott McTominay after his performance against West Ham United, but questioned the form of Anthony Martial

The Red Devils capped off a tumultuous week by losing 3-1 to the Hammers at the London Stadium on Saturday afternoon, compiling further misery on Mourinho.

The Portuguese tactician has reportedly been at loggerheads with Paul Pogba after video footage emerged of the two exchanging heated words during a midweek training session, just one day after the club’s defeat to Derby County in the EFL Cup.

Heading into the match against West Ham, Pogba started in central midfield, but failed to influence proceedings as the Red Devils capitulated at the hands of Manuel Pellegrini’s side.

After the match, Mourinho highlighted the performances of some of his key players; waxing lyrical about McTominay after restoring the Scotland International to his starting XI.

He said: “The third goal killed the team mentally. He was the best, he had a fantastic attitude, he was aggressive and courageous.

“He’s got quality with the ball. Really happy with the work the kid did.”

However, Mourinho was also quick to criticise the performance of Martial, who has failed to produce the kind of form that warrants a starting berth at Old Trafford.

He added: “Look, for how many months people asking for Martial, Martial, Martial. How many months saying Alexis isn’t playing well enoughh.

“This week was time to agree and to say lets give a chance to Martial and lets leave Alexis out.”
