Manchester United manager Jose Mourinho is close to losing his job at the club according to Alan Shearer.
United lost 3-1 to West Ham United at the London Stadium on Saturday, courtesy of goals from Felipe Anderson, Marko Anderson and a Victor Lindelof own goal.
The defeat was United’s second in a row, following the Carabao Cup penalty-shootout exit to Championship side Derby County and capped off a poor week for the club.
In the days following the loss, Mourinho was also captured in a frosty moment with Paul Pogba during pre-season training in which the pair looked to have a disagreement – sparking rumours of departures from United.
And Shearer believes Mourinho’s time at United is running now.
“Something has to give and I think Mourinho will lose his job,” Shearer said (via the Independent).
“I can’t see him turning it around. They were hopeless from start to finish. Too slow, lethargic and very weak.”
The defeat to West Ham, United’s third already in the league this season, leaves the Red Devils currently eighth in the table and Mourinho’s men could be as much as 11 points off top spot by the end of Saturday – not great reading for the club’s fans despite the campaign still being in its early stages.
United, and Mourinho, must now hope for a quick turnaround with a tough Champions League tie against Valencia coming up on Tuesday.
Mourinho and the third season
Going into the 2018/19 campaign, many predicted Mourinho’s time in charge at United would start to unravel given the manager’s supposed inability to manage a team past three years.
Only once in his managerial career has Mourinho made it to a fourth year in charge a club, in his first spell at Chelsea, though he was sacked just a month into it.
His next longest reign came with three complete seasons, at Real Madrid, whom he left after failing to deliver the then-required La Decima – a 10th Champions League trophy.
