West Ham vs Manchester United predictions, stats and betting tips

Manchester United travel to West Ham United looking to bounce back from Tuesday’s Carabao Cup penalty shootout defeat to Derby County.

Meanwhile, the Hammers will be aiming to build on their 8-0 midweek victory over Macclesfield Town.

Manuel Pellegrini’s men will find Man United far more difficult to overcome than Macclesfield, who are currently the lowest-placed team in the English Football League system, but the former Manchester City would love nothing more than to get one over on his old neighbours.

West Ham vs Manchester United tip one: Both teams to score @ 8/11

The hosts will be buzzing after putting eight past Macclesfield regardless of their opponent’s quality. If they can put their newfound confidence to good use – and particularly if Marko Arnautovic returns from injury – they should be confident in finding a way through a United defence that has conceded nine times in the league already this season. To put this into context, by this stage last season the Red Devils had conceded only once in the Premier League.

But Man United’s EFL Cup exit should provoke a reaction from Jose Mourinho’s side, who have scored in all but one game so far this season, the exception being last month’s 3-0 defeat to Tottenham at Old Trafford.

Key stat: On Wednesday, West Ham scored eight goals in a single match for the first time since beating Newcastle United 8-1 in 1986.

West Ham vs Manchester United tip two: Lukaku to score first @ 10/3

Romelu Lukaku is Man United’s top scorer so far this season with four goals and will be central to any success his side enjoys at the London Stadium this weekend.

The Belgian has failed to find the net in each of his last three appearances across all competitions – a striker of his quality is usually due a goal after a dry spell like that. Mourinho is likely to stick with him up front despite the fact he played 90 minutes against Derby. Should Lukaku find the net, he will become just the fourth player ever to score in each of the first four away games of a Premier League campaign. Thierry Henry (2001/02), Daniel Sturridge (2013/14) and Sergio Aguero (2014/15) are the previous players to have achieved this feat.

Key stat: Lukaku has scored Man United’s first goal in three of the five league games the Red Devils have scored in this term.

West Ham vs Manchester United tip three: Man Utd to win @ 88/100

West Ham have won only two of their last 25 meetings with Man United in all competitions, losing 16 and drawing seven. The hosts held Mourinho’s side to a goalless draw in this fixture last season, but Man United will look to their overall record for inspiration.

Pellegrini is yet to lead West Ham to a home win in the Premier League and he may just have to wait a little longer for that elusive victory.

Key stat: West Ham have failed to win any of their five encounters with Man United since leaving Upton Park, drawing two and losing three.

Tip: Man Utd to win @ 88/100 with William Hill – bet here
