Liverpool 1-2 Chelsea: Every player rated as Hazard dumps Reds out of Carabao Cup

In a smash-and-grab display, Chelsea came from behind to beat Liverpool 1-2 at Anfield.

The game looked to be heading for a stalemate as neither team could find the breakthrough. Liverpool scored a stunner to take the lead but then the Blues roared back with Eden Hazard sending them into the fourth round.

Liverpool

Simon Mignolet – 5/10

Poor save from Barkley’s header, palming the ball out into danger and leading to Chelsea’s equaliser.

Nathaniel Clyne – 6/10

Solid up and down the right-flank, but didn’t really do enough to push Trent Alexander-Arnold for a starting spot.

Dejan Lovren – 6/10

Fine performance for the most part. Defended well.

Joel Matip – 6/10

Solid at the back. Not quite Van Dijk levels of commanding but handled Alvaro Morata fairly well.

Alberto Moreno – 4/10

Didn’t help in attack and got absolutely clowned by Eden Hazard for Chelsea’s winner.

Fabinho – 6/10

Did alright on his first start. Didn’t exactly dominate the game but his zone wasn’t a highway for Chelsea transitions.

James Milner – 7/10

Worked tirelessly in midfield. Neat and tidy as ever. Liverpool got markedly worse after he went off.

Naby Keita – 5/10

Some moments of classic Keita elegance, and his pressing was on point. Lucky to escape serious censure after a shocking high tackle, although that was the free-kick from which Chelsea equalised so perhaps he was punished.

Xherdan Shaqiri – 7/10

A cannonball of a display; constantly carrying the ball forward and creating havoc for Chelsea. Didn’t deserve to lose.

Sadio Mané – 6/10

Bright and creative, but failed to take the chances that came his way.

Daniel Sturridge – 7/10

Should have done better with a through-pass just before half-time, and especially at the start of the second half when he went around Caballero only to skew his shot wide. Redeemed himself with a superb overhead kick to give Liverpool the lead, but if you look at the totality of his chances, he should have buried Chelsea.

Jordan Henderson – 4/10

Came on for Milner after 60 minutes. Ran around a bunch barging into opponents but never really settled his side down or contributed much with the ball at all.

Roberto Firmino – 5/10

Came on for Mané after 70 minutes. Added little.

Mohamed Salah – n/a

Came on for Fabinho after 86 minutes.

Chelsea

Willy Cabellero – 9/10

Made numerous big saves to keep Chelsea alive, especially at the start of the second half when he stopped Sturridge 1v1. The only reason Chelsea were in the game so late on. Could do nothing about Sturridge’s goal.

Cesar Azpilicueta – 6/10

As solid as you expect him to be. Failed to provide anything in attack.

Andreas Christensen – 5/10

Never looked comfortable defending in the system. Gave the ball away for a great Sturridge chance. Taken off with a knock late on.

Gary Cahill – 5/10

Not good, but not bad either.

Emerson – 7/10

Constantly exposed as a defensive presence down the Chelsea left, but reacted faster than everyone else to tuck home a massive equaliser for Chelsea with 10 minutes left. A mixed bag.

Cesc Fabregas – 6/10

Some stunning passes, but also completely non-existent as a defensive presence. Allowed so many Liverpool raids forward.

Mateo Kovacic – 5/10

Worked hard, for sure, but did nothing meaningful with the ball at his feet.

Ross Barkley – 6/10

A lively display from the Englishman; his forward raids provided some much-needed thrust in that Chelsea midfield. A superb header to create the Chelsea equaliser.

Victor Moses – 6/10

Ran and ran (and ran). Provided a Pedro-esque performance off the ball, constantly acting as an outlet for the Blues (who rarely used the ball well enough to take advantage).

Willian – 5/10

Drove forward at Liverpool fairly often but didn’t really carry any menace with him. Subbed off for Hazard after 55 minutes.

Alvaro Morata – 6/10

Staggering miss 17 minutes in. Had two bites at the cherry and missed both. He seems to have a good understanding of what he has to do positionally, he just doesn’t seem like he has the quality to execute on it.

Eden Hazard – 8/10

Came on for Willian after 55 minutes. Did absolutely nothing for 29 minutes, almost literally so. Then he burst to life, tearing Alberto Moreno several new ones before hammering home an absolute thunderbolt of a striker to win it for Chelsea. Thereafter seemed to make it his personal mission to humiliate Jordan Henderson for he rest of the match.

N’Golo Kanté – 5/10

Came on for Kovacic after 64 minutes. Added energy.

David Luiz – 6/10

Came on for Christensen after 72 minutes. Stabilised things at the back for the Blues.
