Cristiano Ronaldo: My goal was better than Salah’s Puskas winner

Cristiano Ronaldo has congratulated Mohamed Salah on his Puskas-winning goal, but believes his “amazing” bicycle kick was the worthy winner of the prestigious accolade.

Cristiano Ronaldo, 33, produced one of the moments of his glittering career last season after he netted a sensational bicycle kick past a hapless Gianluigi Buffon, during Real Madrid’s 3-0 drubbing of Juventus in the Champions League quarter-final first-leg.

Los Blancos would subsequently go on to retain the famous ‘Big-Ears’ trophy that term, clinching Europe’s most-celebrated title for a third successive season, and Cristiano Ronaldo scored 15 goals en route to that triumph – the most of any player.

Despite this, Liverpool forward Salah received the Puskas award for ‘most beautiful’ goal after his effort against Everton last season, and Cristiano Ronaldo had a few choice words to tell his 142 million Instagram followers.

He said: “Salah deserved to win the Puskas award, it was a good goal. But let’s be honest, let’s not lie to ourselves, my goal was the best.”

Now at Juventus, Cristiano Ronaldo also lost out on the highly-coveted FIFA best player award to his former Real team-mate Luka Modric, but the five-time Ballon d’Or winner was more than complimentary of the Croat.

He added: “Congratulations to Modric on his win as the best player of the year according to FIFA.

“I’m not disappointed, life is like that, sometimes you win and others lose, what interests me is that in 15 years of career I managed to maintain the same levels of performance.

“Awards are awards… I already have a lot. I play to win and not to win awards.”

Juventus host Young Boys in their second Group H game of the Champions League campaign on Tuesday, but will be without Ronaldo as he serves out his one-match ban after his altercation with Valencia defender Jeison Murillo.

Ronaldo this season

Looking to win the Champions League title with a third team in his trophy-laden career, Cristiano Ronaldo will be hoping to add another European trophy to the four he won with Real Madrid and one with Manchester United.

This season, the Portugal international has featured in eight games across all competitions, scoring three goals, registering four assists and picking up three man-of-the-match awards – all in Serie A.

Ronaldo has currently taken the most shots of any player across Europe’s top five divisions this season (54) at a rate of 7.7 per 90 minutes, as well as taking on the most efforts from outside the box (19), at a rate of 2.7 per 90.

Known as a somewhat selfish forward, Ronaldo has already created the most chances of any Juventus player this term (15) at 2.1 per 90, as well as registering the most assists (four) – no other player has registered over one this season in the league.
