Portuguese midfielder Renato Sanches‘ “incredible power” can offer Bayern Munich something unique, according to Mats Hummels.
After being named Young Player of the Tournament in Portugal’s Euro 2016 success, Sanches left Benfica to join Bayern Munich for a fee that reportedly started in the region of £31.2m, potentially rising to £71.3m in add-ons.
However, Sanches struggled to adjust to life at the perennial German champions and was farmed out on loan to Swansea City last season.
An injury-hit, inconsistent campaign saw the 21-year-old make just 15 appearances for the South Wales club and his career at Bayern looked bleak moving forward.
However, under new head coach Niko Kovac, Sanches appears to be undergoing a transformation and after a scoring return to Benfica in the Champions League, the midfielder also impressed in Bayern’s 1-1 draw with Augsburg on Tuesday, drawing plaudits from senior defender Mats Hummels.
“He has given himself outstanding chances with his irresistible start to the season,” Hummels told reporters (via FourFourTwo) after Tuesday’s game, which also saw the Bavarians lose their 100% start to the season after Sanches and his team-mates missed a host of opportunities.
“Of course, he had to score, but that happens. He has an incredible power.
“He is a player who shakes off the opponent when he picks up speed. We do not really have that kind of player in our team. He has great physical potential.”
Renato Sanches has scored his first ever goal for Bayern Munich in any competition; against the team they signed him from: Benfica.

Sanches has himself admitted that his game still needs improvements, but feels that he is thriving under the confidence Kovac, as well as the confidence his Bayern team-mates are showing in him.
He added: “I think I had a decent game. I felt very good. I have missed some chances and I hope it will be better in the next game because the most important thing is that we win.
“I feel very good and settled. It’s important that I get into a rhythm. I am a young player and I have a lot to learn. But, if I keep working hard, I’ll get the playing time.
“[Kovac] gave me good instructions. With the ball and without the ball, he said that I can also stay in the space in which I am able to score. But not only the coach, also my team-mates give me good tips and confidence.”
The 28-time Bundesliga winners travel to Hertha Berlin in their next game on Friday.
