Tottenham Hotspur‘s new stadium will be “the greatest that’s ever been built” according to chief engineer Nick Cooper.
The multi-purpose stadium will hold a planned capacity of 62,062 and will be largest in London, and one of the largest in the Premier League, second only to Manchester United’s Old Trafford, which holds circa 74,994.
A number of issues have occurred in preparation for its official unveiling, which was due on September 15, however, Spurs are yet to give a new completion date and it is not expected to be fit for purpose until the new year.
Despite this, chief engineer Cooper believes that once the stadium is up and running, it will sit at the pinnacle of architectural structures in world football.
“We’ve tried to do something in double time,” engineer Nick Cooper said (via BBC Sport).
“If you look at any other project of this nature you wouldn’t have achieved as much as we’ve achieved with the stadium.
“Be patient with us, we understand the frustrations.”
Contractor Mace have already claimed that the unexpected delay has been due to faulty wiring, and while no official completion date has been given, Spurs manager Mauricio Pochettino is expecting to lead his team out before 2019.
“If I have to help finish it to keep the supporters happy, I will,” he said (via BBC Sport).
“I am confident [it will be ready] this year.
“They are working hard to try to find the solution. I hope before the [end of the] year, before Christmas, we can play. That’s my wish.”
The north London club have once again been forced to play their home matches at Wembley, while Wednesday night’s League Cup triumph over Watford was played out at Stadium MK, due to Wembley not being ready in time after the Anthony Joshua fight.
The delayed unveiling has also left season ticket holders in a state of flux due to incompatible ticketing systems between the new stadium and Wembley, which requires fans to claim a refund on home matches where they bought fresh tickets for Wembley matches.
