Rio Ferdinand says that Manchester United have some “big decisions” to make following his former club’s 3-1 defeat to West Ham United on Saturday.
Goals from Felipe Anderson, Marko Arnautovic and an own goal by Victor Lindelof sealed the Red Devils’ fate on Saturday afternoon, capping off United’s joint-worst league start in 29 years.
It’s looking increasingly like Jose Mourinho’s job at Old Trafford is in jeopardy, as his side suffered another defeat in the Premier League.
Mourinho appears to be presiding over another dysfunctional dressing room after his adversarial relationship with Paul Pogba got public airing this week with the release of a viral video showing the pair exchanging frosty glances at United’s training complex.
Speaking after the game Ferdinand says that things have to improve at Old Trafford.
“There’s some big decisions to be made at Manchester United now from the hierarchy,” Ferdinand said on BT’s post-match coverage.
“The manager, the squad and how they are going to take this club forward. There has to be improvements.”
Paul Scholes, who was also covering the game echoed Ferdinand and said the club “seems in a bit of a mess”.
Speaking after the loss, Mourinho lamented his side’s start which saw them go behind after just five minutes, which the Portuguese believes showed mental fragility from his players.
He said: “I think a team that comes with that mental fragility of the bad results and is losing 1-0 after 5 minutes isn’t the best way to start. It was an offside goal.”
Game over for Jose?
Mourinho asked commentators to judge him after his third season with United. The Portuguese tactician is at the beginning of his third campaign with the club and it’s already evident that the Red Devils are unlikely to clinch the Premier League title this season and could even be lucky to finish in the top four.
The United manager’s latest loss will put him under increasing pressure to get results and pundits such as Alan Shearer told NBC that it’s doubtful that Mourinho will be able to turn it around. With managers like Zinedine Zidane reportedly interested in taking the reins at Old Trafford Mourinho will be desperate for his side to improve their results.
United’s next game is at home against Valencia in the Champions League.
