Kevin De Bruyne will be back far sooner than you might expect, says Roberto Martinez

Manchester City midfielder Kevin De Bruyne will return from his injury sooner than anticipated, according to his Belgium boss Roberto Martinez.

Voted City’s ‘Player of the Season’ last season after their fantastic Premier League showing that saw them run away with the league title, finishing on 100 points, De Bruyne has had to watch from the sidelines so far this campaign.

The 27-year-old had a terrible start to the season after he injured himself in training last month, causing damage to the ligaments in his right knee, and was diagnosed with a three-month absence from football.

However, despite the medical timescale, Belgium manager Martinez believes that De Bruyne’s determination to return to domestic and international action, alongside his naturally fit physicality, will see the talented playmaker return to action much quicker than expected.

Speaking at the FIFA Football Conference (via Sky Sports) Martinez said: “It was a freak accident, it happens, football is a contact sport.

“The issue is how long he will be out and the reports are very positive. I think we’ll see him on the pitch a lot earlier than other players would take with that injury [and] we think he could be even fresher after his period away.

“No timescale yet but Kevin wants to be on the football pitch as quick as he can and physically he’s got that natural gift of being able to heal quicker than other players.”

Manchester City’s next fixtures

Manchester City comfortably dispatched Oxford United 3-0 in the League Cup last night, with Phil Foden getting his first senior goal for the club.

Their next Premier League match takes place on Saturday when they host south coast side Brighton & Hove Albion at the Etihad Stadium.
