Martin Keown says he can’t think of any bigger shock in Manchester United‘s history than the defeat to Derby County in the League Cup.
Man Utd have had a torrid time at Old Trafford so far this season and have failed to win their last three home games across all competitions, with the latest upset coming on Tuesday night against Frank Lampard’s Derby County.
The tie ended up going to penalties with United losing 8-7 to the Championship side, topping off a frustrating week for manager Jose Mourinho.
The Portuguese tactician is apparently at odds with star midfielder Paul Pogba, and removed his vice-captaincy following the Frenchman’s criticisms over his tactics in the aftermath of the 1-1 draw with Wolves at Old Trafford last Saturday.
Keown observed that Mourinho “seems to be at war with his players” and commented that he needs to start appreciating them more.
“He needs to start seeing the good in what they do,” Keown told BBC Sport.
“Is he pulling up the handbrake? Everyone in the media is quick to turn this into a massive crisis.
“Manchester United have had some good away results but suddenly they’re not able to win at home. I don’t enjoy seeing them not being competitive.
“Mourinho has said the pundits on the sofa have got too much to say. One of them, Frank Lampard, has proved him wrong. It’s a great scalp.
“Jose seems to be at war with his players. This was a really good United team and I can’t think of many bigger shocks in their history. Mourinho tried to go for it and he’ll be hurting in the dressing room.”
United travel to east London to face West Ham in the Premier League’s lunch-time kick-off on Saturday.
