Former Manchester United and England centre-back Rio Ferdinand says that “something has to give” at Old Trafford.
A fully fledged circus is developing at Old Trafford with swathes of the press besieging the club, searching for the latest trickle of controversy leaking from United’s dressing room.
Jose Mourinho is presiding over what has become an all too familiar sight in his managerial career. A divided squad, world-class players putting in less than world-class performances, strained relations with owners and an increasingly adversarial relationship with the press.
It’s not as if this kind of drama has not erupted at Old Trafford in the past, but as Ferdinand carefully points out, it was dealt with rather more swiftly when Sir Alex Ferguson was at the helm.
“I hate going backwards, but you have to because comparisons keep being made,” Ferdinand said during BT Sport‘s post-match coverage of West Ham’s 3-1 victory over the Red Devils at the London Stadium on Saturday.
He added: “But back in the day Sir Alex Ferguson would’ve ironed it out if a players stepped out of line in his eyes they were gone.
“Whether [or not] they were in their prime they were gone. David Beckham, Jaap Stam, Roy Keane, Ruud van Nistelrooy.
“If you step out of line in the manager’s eyes – the guy who is running the place, and the one who says this is my house – then they get rid and they’re gone. Otherwise it is you who goes. So, something has got to give here.”
Manchester United play Sevilla in the Champions League on Tuesday night in a crucial match for Mourinho at Old Trafford.
