Troy Deeney: Joe Gomez will be England centre-back for 15 years

Watford captain Troy Deeney has heaped praise on Liverpool centre-back Joe Gomez, believing the defender can be an England player for the next 15 years.

Gomez, 21, has so far enjoyed a stellar start to the season, forming an impeccable centre-back partnership with Virgil van Dijk in the heart of Liverpool’s watertight defence.

The Charlton academy product has played in every Premier League match for the Reds this campaign and has only conceded two goals, with his side sitting top of the table having won their opening six matches.

His performances have received widespread adulation and much attention, and Watford striker Deeney now believes Gomez has the capacity to become a mainstay in the core of England’s defence for the next 15 years.

“I’ve said for a very long time that I’ve got a massive respect for Joe Gomez,” he said (via Liverpool Echo). “He could be England’s centre-half for the next 15 years.

“He is a beast of a player. And going next to someone like Van Dijk, he is only going to get better.”

Another man who has recognised the undeniable talents of Gomez is England manager Gareth Southgate, who rewarded the tyro’s fine form with a recall to the national side for September’s matches against Spain and Switzerland.

The Catford-born defender played the full 90 minutes in the Three Lions’ 2-1 loss to Spain in the inaugural match of the UEFA Nations League, marking his fourth international cap as a result.

Gomez will likely be reinstated into the Liverpool starting XI for this weekend’s Premier League clash against Chelsea, after he missed out on a place in Wednesday night’s Carabao Cup defeat to the Blues.

Gomez at Liverpool

Signed for £3.5m in 2015 from Charlton Athletic, Gomez has incrementally improved under the stewardship of Jurgen Klopp, and is now a first-choice defender in the Liverpool defence.

Having suffered an anterior cruciate ligament injury during his maiden campaign, which kept him out of action for over a year, Gomez has recovered well and is now showing immense glimmers of his defensive capabilities.

During his four seasons on Merseyside, the versatile defender has amassed 48 appearances across all competitions for the club, racking up 3,926 minutes of first-team football, and providing three assists in that time.
