FIFA’s The Best shortlist bothers me, admits Antoine Griezmann

Atletico Madrid forward Antoine Griezmann believes a Frenchman should be on the FIFA three-man shortlist for the world’s best male footballer of the year.

The 27-year-old, who scored four goals at the World Cup including in the final, believes his country’s success at the tournament should have led to some individual recognition.

Cristiano Ronaldo, Mohamed Salah and Luka Modric are the players nominated for the FIFA Best award, which is separate from the Ballon d’Or.

Speaking to reporters (via Goal) at a commercial event on Tuesday, Griezmann admitted: “The Best bothers me. It’s a FIFA award and there are no Frenchmen. It’s weird.”

The former Real Sociedad talisman netted 29 goals in all competitions for Diego Simeone’s side last term as they sealed the Europa League crown, scoring twice in a 3-0 victory over Marseille in the Final to win his first-ever major trophy.

France left-back Lucas Hernandez believes his club team-mate deserved to make the cut.

“It’s an injustice,” he said. “Griezmann has been the best this year. He’s not got a nomination, but I hope he wins the Ballon d’Or. He deserves it.”

Griezmann also felt aggrieved at the omission of Atleti’s Jan Oblak from the goalkeeping category. Kasper Schmeichel, Thibaut Courtois and Hugo Lloris were put forward instead.

“He’s the best in the world for me, but not because he’s my team-mate. He’s brilliant.”

Atletico take on Eimar in La Liga at the weekend.
