I’m not fussed about personal awards, claims Luka Modric

Luka Modric insists he is not interested in individual accolades after being nominated for the Best FIFA Men’s Player award.

The 33-year-old, who was crowned the 2017-18 UEFA Men’s Player of the Year ahead of Cristiano Ronaldo and Mohamed Salah at the end of August, is up against the same two players this time around.

Despite the adulation that has come his way, Modric is more focused on adding to his notable collection of silverware at the Bernabeu, which includes four Champions League titles.

Speaking to journalists (via the Daily Mail) after Croatia were surprisingly thrashed 6-0 in the UEFA Nations League by Spain, he said: “For me, the most important thing is the collective. Winning the prize is not what obsesses me the most. If I do not win it, nothing happens.”

Following a World Cup in which the Real Madrid midfielder’s influence played no small part in his nation getting to the final for the first time, Zlatko Dalic’s men were brought back down to earth with a bump in Elche on Tuesday evening.

Strikes from Saul, Rodrigo and Modric’s team-mates Marco Asensio, Sergio Ramos and Isco – as well as an own goal from Nikola Kalinic – sealed the win.

Modric and Madrid travel to Athletic Bilbao in La Liga this weekend.
