Pep Guardiola has denied reports that Kevin De Bruyne has a €250 million release clause in his contract.
Registering a league-high 16 assists, De Bruyne was one of the star men for City as they clinched last season’s Premier League title, wiping out a host of records in the process.
The Belgian international, who has made 142 appearances for the Premier League champions, also signed a new six-year deal at the Etihad back in January and, in a recent interview with Universo Valdano (via Goal), Guardiola was quoted as saying: “[Leeds United boss] Marcelo Bielsa told me he [De Bruyne] was his favourite player. He does everything.
“He’s an incredible boy. The clause is €250m. I’m sorry, he’s not for sale.”
However, Guardiola has since refuted those claims and has hinted that he was actually misquoted.
The ex-Barcelona coach told a press conference (via Goal’s Sam Lee): “I don’t know what is his release clause. Jorge Valdano asked me if we would sell him for €250m and I said no. I don’t think he has a release clause.”
De Bruyne’s Man City teammates have started the season in strong form, winning three of their first four games and remaining unbeaten.
The Citizens’ next game is at home to newly-promoted Fulham tomorrow afternoon, although they will have to cope without their midfield maestro as he is still nursing an injury and is set to miss another two-to-three months.
