Atletico Madrid publicly urge Diego Simeone to renew contract with the club

The Atletico Madrid hierarchy have expressed their utmost desire for Diego Simeone to extend his stay in the Spanish capital.

Simeone, 48, will see his present deal expire in the summer of 2020, but the club have already indicated concern the Argentine tactician could part ways from the club at the end of next season.

The Buenos Aires-born coach has been a revelation since taking the reins at Los Rojiblancos in 2011, masterminding the club’s famous La Liga triumph in 2014, but there are now fears that next campaign could be his last.

“It would be best for all parties if he were to renew the deal,” the club’s CEO Miguel Angel Gil Marin told Cuban outlet Juventud Rebelde, as cited by Football Espana.

“It is tough to meet a match which leads to long-term results but this is what we have tried to do, even if this is extremely difficult in a sporting sense.

“Simeone has the remainder of this season and the entirety of the next one and we want this to be extended further, it is simple.

“I was the individual who brought him to the club, as I do with virtually all of our employees and it was one of my best decisions.”

Marin went on to laud the progress that the club has made in the past decade, citing Champions League final appearances, a move from the Vicente Calderon Stadium to the Wanda Metropolitano and a plethora of silverware as huge indicators of success.

He added: “There is a lot of hard work behind all the success, it has been annual growth each season.

“We have won 11 trophies in nine years and now we have 125,000 socios, almost 30m followers on social media and now we have a new stadium which is reaching the Champions League final.”

Simeone in Madrid

A former Rojiblancos player, Simeone became Atelti manager in 2011, having only previously coached in Argentina as well as a brief stint with Catania in Italy.

During his time in the Spanish capital, the 48-year-old has overseen 390 matches across all competitions, winning 241, drawing 84, and losing just 65.

He has clinched a number of trophies for the club in that time, including winning the La Liga title, the Copa del Rey, the Supercopa de Espana, two UEFA Europa League titles and two UEFA Super Cups.

Atleti are currently fourth in La Liga having drawn 1-1 with Villarreal over the weekend, and they next face Borussia Dortmund in the Champions League on Wednesday.
