Huddersfield 0-1 Liverpool: Every player rated as Fabinho makes his Premier League debut in the Reds’ away win

Liverpool secured a 1-0 away win against Huddersfield Town in the Premier League in a match that was settled by a moment of magic from Mohamed Salah.

As expected, Liverpool had the vast majority of possession and took the lead when Mohamed Salah scored a well-taken goal after 24 minutes of action. However, Huddersfield ended the first half on top and were perhaps unlucky to go in 1-0 down at halftime.

Into the second 45, both sides struggled to create any real opportunities as Huddersfield chased an equaliser and Liverpool tried to put the game to bed.

As the game reached its end, Huddersfield looked the most likely scorers but it wasn’t meant to be for David Wagner’s men. Fellow German Jurgen Klopp will be delighted to get another win and maintain their unbeaten start to the season, with the win leaving them in second place in the table.

Huddersfield end the day in 19th but did produce a decent performance against the Reds.

Here are the player ratings from Liverpool’s 1-0 win against Huddersfield Town.

Huddersfield Town

Jonas Lossl – 6 – The Danish goalkeeper must have assumed he would be the busier of the two shot-stoppers going into this match. His first real piece of action was picking the ball out of the back of the net midway through the first half. Wasn’t really tested too much after that.

Florent Hadergonaj – 6 – Slotting in on the right-hand side for the hosts, the 24-year-old actually got forward a fair amount to help support Huddersfield’s attack. Subbed.

Christopher Schindler – 7 – The ever-present centre-back could have marked Salah a little tighter for the opening goal but allowed the Egyptian to turn and shoot into the bottom corner. However, he was solid for the rest of the match and produced a really good performance at the back.

Mathias Jørgensen – 6 – Zanka was solid alongside his fellow centre-halves as Liverpool were limited to just the occasional clear-cut chance.

Erik Durm – 6 – The former Borussia Dortmund player produced a good performance and coped reasonably well with Liverpool’s movement.

Chris Lowe – 6 – Taking his place in the Huddersfield defence, Low was tasked with minimising Liverpool’s space. His impressive energy levels were clear to see and were a big part of the club’s solid performance.

Philip Billing – 6 – At just 22-years-old, Billing faced a very experience Reds midfield and didn’t do his reputation any harm. Produced a great free-kick in the first half that JUST went wide of Alisson’s post. He did waste a decent counter-attacking chance with some poor ball control. Subbed.

Aaron Mooy – 7 – Often Huddersfield’s man to produce a moment of magic, the former Manchester City midfielder controlled the game with his excellent passing ability and was the anchor to a well balanced Huddersfield side.

Jonathon Hogg – 6 – The midfielder was unlucky when he bulleted a shot from 25 yards against the post in the opening 45 minutes. Lucky not to pick up a booking. Subbed.

Alex Pritchard – 7 – The only real playmaker in the starting eleven for Huddersfield had a good game, running at the Liverpool defence, urging his teammates forward with his direct play. A good showing for the former Spurs man.

Laurent Depoitre – 7 – Struggling for goals and often left up top on his own, the centre-forward did well with the scraps he was offered. Won a fair few headers against the Liverpool defence, he was occasionally able to hold the ball up and bring in the few Huddersfield attackers into the final third. Had a decent header saved in the second half.

Substitutions

Steve Mounie – 6 – Missed a good chance in the final 10 minutes that cost his side a point. Perhaps harsh, but was a decent chance.

Isaac Mbenza – 6 – Little influence.

Adama Diakhaby – 6 – Zero time to produce.

Liverpool

Alisson – 6 – A few scary moments in the first half for the Brazilian who occasionally wanted a little too much time on the ball. A decent save from Depoitre followed and he never really looked like conceding.

Joe Gomez – 7 – Carrying on from his excellent form from the start of this season, Gomez always looks so relaxed when under pressure and always looks to pass to a teammate when possible.

Dejan Lovren – 6 – The Croatian always splits opinions and it’s clear to see why. For every nine good moments, there will be one risky piece of play. Decent display.

Virgil van Dijk – 6 – Won the small majority of headers against a competitive Depoitre, Van Dijk was rarely pressured otherwise and helped marshal the Liverpool backline.

Andrew Robertson – 6 – The Scot wasn’t as influential today as we know he can be but produced a steady 90 minutes.

James Milner – 7 – Milner always provides a performance worthy of at least a 7/10 and today was no different. Resolute, positive and always looking to create, every team needs a Milner. Subbed.

Jordan Henderson – 6 – Liverpool’s middleman lasted 45 minutes and provided a steady if unremarkable performance. Went off with a tight hamstring.

Adam Lallana – 7 – Making his first Premier League start since new years day, Lallana showcased all the flicks, tricks and creativity that he is renowned for. He would have been delighted to have started the match and Klopp will be equally happy with the Englishman’s performance.

Xherdan Shaqiri – 7 – Coming into the starting line-up for Klopp’s side, Shaqiri provided the assist for Liverpool’s opening goal and generally looked lively. There were a few moments of genuine class from the Swiss international.

Mohamed Salah – 8 – Off form? Fat chance. Last years best player showcased his abilities once again with a great strike in the 24th minute. Fed by Shaqiri, Salah tucked the ball into the far corner to put the Reds 1-0 up. Some neat build-up play, movement and composure further emphasising his talent.

Daniel Sturridge – 6 – Taking the place of the benched and rested Roberto Firmino, Sturridge’s class is evident and with a long run of games could be a real squad asset this season. He showed some decent movement but didn’t fashion a real goalscoring chance we know he has in his locker.

Substitutions

Georginio Wijnaldum – 6 – Brought on in the second half, the Dutchman was on the end of a few rough challenges but ultimately came out unscathed.

Fabinho – 6 – Introduced to Premier League football late on, Liverpool’s summer signing didn’t have an opportunity to influence the game one way or the other. Welcome to English football Fabinho!

Roberto Firmino – 6 – Rested after a busy international break, Firmino had little time to affect the match.
