Paris Saint-Germain have hit back at allegations of match-fixing during their 6-1 Champions League win over Red Star Belgrade.
Earlier on Friday, French publication L’Equipe revealed authorities had opened an investigation, having been alerted by Uefa, into possible match fixing during the group stage meeting between PSG and Red Star.
According to the reports, Uefa received word that a senior leader of Red Star intended, along with others, to place “several million Euros” on a defeat for the Serbian club by five goals.
But now PSG have responded to the claims, rejecting all implication and denying the club have been approached as part of the investigation.
“It was with the greatest amazement that Paris Saint-Germain discovered this Friday an article on the L’Equipe website regarding suspicions of match-fixing concerning the UEFA Champions League game with Red Star Belgrade on 3 October, suspicions regarding the alleged actions of bettors from Serbia,” the club said in a statement released on their official website.
“The club categorically rejects any and all direct and indirect implication in relation to these suspicions and would like to point out at no moment has Paris Saint-Germain been approached by the National Financial Court in charge of the investigation.
“Paris Saint-Germain remains at the disposal of the investigators and will not tolerate the slightest attack on its reputation nor that of its officials. To that end, the club reserves the right to take legal action against any party that makes defamatory statements against the club and/or its officials.
“The club reaffirms its profound attachment to the fundamental principle of sport, which is and always will be the integrity of its competitions.”
Neymar scored a hat-trick for PSG as they beat Red Star in Paris, with Edinson Cavani, Angel Di Maria and Kylian Mbappe also finding the net for the French club. Former Chelsea midfielder Marko Marin scored for Red Star.
PSG are currently top of Ligue 1 having won all nine of their opening games so far, scoring 32 and conceding just six.
