Unai Emery: I thought about signing Alexandre Lacazette at PSG

Arsenal head coach Unai Emery has revealed he tried to sign Alexandre Lacazette while in charge of Paris Saint-Germain.

Lacazette joined Arsenal from Lyon last season and had a good first campaign, scoring 17 goals in 39 appearances across all competitions.

The January arrival of Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang looked to threaten Lacazette’s standing as Arsenal’s first-choice striker but the pair have worked well as a partnership this season.

And Emery, who took charge of Arsenal in the summer, has admitted he did try to lure Lacazette to PSG during his time in Paris.

“When I arrived at PSG we were thinking about signing Lacazette,” he said (via Goal).

“He was at Lyon and it wasn’t easy to have the conversation or to sign a player from Lyon or for Lyon from PSG.”

Lacazette has started his second year with Arsenal brightly, scoring five goals in 10 games across all competitions including four in the Premier League so far.

The Gunners will be banking on the Frenchman to strike again on Monday when they face Leicester City, knowing a win would see them move level on points with Chelsea and Tottenham Hotspur – two points behind Manchester City and Liverpool.

Lacazette’s partnership with Aubameyang

After losing their opening two matches of the season, against Manchester City and Chelsea, Arsenal have won their past six matches, scoring 17 in the process – no fewer than two per game.

Part of this has been down to the understanding between Lacazette and Aubameyang, with the pair having scored eight Premier League goals between them (four each).

Lacazette and Aubameyang have also combined to score one goal, with the Frenchman assisting his partner in the 3-2 win over Cardiff City at the start of September.
