Why Jose Mourinho was forced to walk to Old Trafford ahead of Juventus clash

Manchester United manager Jose Mourinho is in the headlines once again, but this time it is for a more peculiar reason.

In United’s 2-2 draw with Chelsea at the weekend, the Portuguese did not take kindly to Blues assistant coach Marco Ianni celebrating Ross Barkley’s last-minute equaliser directly at him, causing a melee on the touchline.

This came after Mourinho was charged by the FA for alleged abusive language over comments he made in Portuguese to a television camera after his side’s game against Newcastle United before the international break.

But, ahead of United’s home game against Juventus in the Champions League on Tuesday night, Mourinho reportedly walked half a mile to Old Trafford due to traffic around the ground.

On-going roadworks in the area has seen traffic massively build over the past few months, with United previously being fined by Uefa for the delay of their kick-off against Valencia last time out.

And, in a bid to avoid a repeat, Mourinho reportedly walked from the team’s hotel at Old Trafford Cricket Ground, walking to United’s home while the players stayed stuck on the bus.

Tuesday’s game against Juventus will see United have the chance to top their Champions League group, currently sitting on four points – two behind their opponents.

As such, Mourinho has named a strong side from the off, remaining unchanged from the team which drew with Chelsea at the weekend – the first time United have started the same XI in consecutive games this season.

As a result, Juan Mata continues in his number 10 role which worked well against Chelsea, with Chris Smalling and Victor Lindelof continuing as the centre-back pairing.

Anthony Martial has also retained his place after his brace at the weekend, while Romelu Lukaku starts up front as the only striking option available with Alexis Sanchez injured.

Juventus have also named a strong side with former Manchester United forward Cristiano Ronaldo leading the line, flanked by Paulo Dybala and Juan Cuadrado.

There is also a return to England for former Arsenal goalkeeper Wojciech Szczesny with the formidable centre-back pairing of Giorgio Chiellini and Leonardo Bonucci ahead of him.
