Why there won’t be any Red Star Belgrade fans in Anfield for Champions League clash v Liverpool

Liverpool will take on Red Star Belgrade in their third Champions League group match of the season at Anfield on Wednesday, but they will do so without any away fans in the stadium.

The two teams currently sit two points apart in Group C, with Liverpool having won their opener against PSG, only to be beaten in their away clash with Napoli earlier this month.

Red Star held Napoli to a 0-0 draw in their first match of this year’s competition, but were beaten 6-1 by PSG in their second group game.

That match was the first of two Red Star Champions League away games to be played without any of their fans in the stadium.

The Serbian champions’ supporters were punished by UEFA after invading the pitch and setting off fireworks in their 2-2 Champions League play-off draw against Red Bull Salzburg earlier this season, a result which saw them qualify for the group stages for the first time in 26 years.

UEFA banned Red Star from bringing fans to their next two European away matches, which happened to be against PSG and Liverpool.

Reports on Wednesday suggested that there are still a number of Red Star supporters in Liverpool who are trying to buy tickets for the match, with one fan claiming that supporters of the Serbian champions were offering home fans as much as €500 for a ticket.

Home fans only

The ban means that Red Star face an even more challenging night at Anfield without the presence of their supporters.

Vladan Milojevic’s side are currently seven points clear at the top of the Serbian SuperLiga but head into this match with a number of important players missing through injury.

Liverpool have offered the away allocation to their own fans, with a large section being offered to home supporters between the ages of 17 and 21.
