Jose Mourinho would have won three Premier League titles at Man City – Didier Drogba

Didier Drogba has said Jose Mourinho only receives criticism because he is “one of the best”, suggesting his former manager would have won “two or three” Premier League titles with Manchester City.

Drogba – who announced his retirement on Wednesday – and Mourinho won three Premier League titles together at Chelsea, the latest of which came in 2014/15, the year Drogba returned to Stamford Bridge for one final campaign.

Since leaving Chelsea, Mourinho has received criticism for his lack of major success with Manchester United, something Drogba believes in unfair.

Drogba and Mourinho: five things you need to know…

1. Mourinho managed Chelsea to successive Premier League titles in 2004/05 and 2005/06. Drogba scored 22 goals across those two campaigns.

2. Mourinho left Chelsea for the first time in September 2007. Drogba left for China in 2012.

3. The two were reunited at Chelsea in 2014/15, winning the Premier League title once again.

4. Drogba left again and Mourinho was sacked months later, eventually joining Manchester United.

5. Despite winning the EFL Cup and the Europa League in his first season, a trophyless second campaign has opened Mourinho up to criticism.

“I think if you put him at Manchester City, he would have won the league twice, maybe two or three times,” Drogba said, according to Sky Sports.

“You get criticism because you set a standard of winning, winning and winning and now you’re not winning or having the same results. He is still there. You have to look at all the managers who were at Manchester United the last few years.

“Being manager after Sir Alex Ferguson is not easy and the finances that they had then are not the same as what they have now. People only pay attention to the best and he’s one of the best and that’s why he gets all of this.

“I think he’s taking the challenge because it’s a big challenge and if people criticise you then how can you enjoy it? It’s tough. After all, he’s human.

“He’s trying to change his approach and that’s what the best managers do and when things are not working you try to change it.”

Is Drogba right?

In the summer, Mourinho was vocal about Manchester United’s poor recruitment, something Pep Guardiola hasn’t had a problem with at Manchester City.

It’s difficult to judge whether Mourinho would be winning titles with City. His conservative approach clashes with Guardiola’s expressive system, which suits City’s current players perfectly.

There is no guarantee Mourinho’s tactics would work at the Etihad, but the Portuguese may have been able to utilise a more effective recruitment policy.

United face Crystal Palace at Old Trafford in the Premier League this weekend, while City travel to West Ham United.
