Mauricio Pochettino defends Spurs midfielder Dele Alli over hotel video

Mauricio Pochettino has defended Dele Alli and Ross Barkley after accusations levelled at the England pair following footage captured at a hotel.

Alli and Barkley, who are set to face each other when Tottenham take on Chelsea in the Premier League this weekend, were accused of demanding a room upgrade in a Mayfair hotel in the early hours of the morning.

But Pochettino has accused onlookers of creating an issue out of nothing.

What were Alli and Barkley accused of doing? Five things you need to know…

1. Barkley and Alli both featured in England’s 2-1 UEFA Nations League victory over Croatia on Sunday.

2. Later, a 36-second clip of Alli and Barkley speaking to hotel staff began to do rounds, although it’s unclear what the footballers were saying.

3. Claims the pair were demanding an upgrade to a hotel room surfaced, although Alli and Barkley cannot be heard in the video.

4. According to the Mirror, Alli’s representatives said: “He was not staying at the hotel, so clearly could not have been demanding an upgrade.”

5. Mauricio Pochettino was asked about the video and said there is “nothing wrong” with it.

In his press conference on Thursday, Pochettino said:“I saw the video. Nothing wrong, and we create a problem where there’s not a problem.

“I defend the players in that situation. Today, [to film that], that is completely unfair.”

Tottenham vs Chelsea, Alli vs Barkley

Wembley will host a Premier League London derby between Spurs and Chelsea on Saturday, and Alli and Barkley will both be hoping to start.

Alli has scored five times against Chelsea in the past; four of those goals came in league fixtures, including a double at Stamford Bridge last season.

Barkley was believed to be on Tottenham’s radar before leaving Everton for Chelsea in the January transfer window.

The 24-year-old has scored three goals in 11 Premier League appearances so far this season.
