Emery explains the four roles of Arsenal's "fabulous" Henry-esque player

Arsenal forward Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang has the potential to win the Premier League Golden Boot, according to manager Unai Emery.

Aubameyang, 29, is the current top-scorer in the league with 10 goals, having scored a brace in Arsenal’s 4-2 win over Tottenham Hotspur at the weekend.

Can Aubameyang win the Golden Boot? Five key things to know…

  1. Aubameyang joined Arsenal in the January transfer window from Borussia Dortmund.
  2. The forward scored 10 goals in his first 13 games, finishing the season as Arsenal’s second-highest goalscorer.
  3. This season, with 10 goals in the opening 15 games, he leads the Golden Boot race.
  4. And Emery believes Aubameyang can go all the way for the prize, as long as he keeps showing “commitment”.
  5. No player has scored more goals in the Premier League than Aubameyang (20) since the Gabonese joined in January.

Eight of those 10 goals have come in Aubameyang’s last eight games, though he did not find the net in Arsenal’s 2-2 draw with Manchester United on Wednesday.

Throughout his career, Aubameyang has been played across various attacking positions, including this season for Arsenal with Emery deploying him across the front line. But the Gabonese forward has flourished as the Gunners’ middle-man, something which has delighted his new manager, who feels Aubameyang has four roles for Arsenal.

“In his career, he has played as a winger on the right, on the left and like a striker,” Emery told Sky Sports after Arsenal’s win over Tottenham at the weekend.

“He [has] played with two strikers. I use with him in every position for us. And sometimes his best performance is starting the match on the bench and then playing 20 or 25 minutes. In the last two matches, he has had a very big performance, working and scoring.

“I want to say to him and also to everyone: ‘don’t stop, continue with this commitment every match.'”

Emery went on to speak of Aubameyang’s chances of winning the Premier League’s Golden Boot, urging the Gabon international to keep moving forward in order to achieve his goal.

“I want him to continue improving, and his challenge is also collective and individual,” he added.

“I want his challenge to be that he has the opportunity to be the best scorer in the Premier League. We want to help him achieve this and that is because, if he is scoring, he is helping us.”

Arsenal next face Huddersfield Town in the Premier League on Saturday, having extended their unbeaten run to 20 games following the 2-2 draw with Manchester United on Wednesday.

Is Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang Arsenal’s new Thierry Henry?

Emery is not the only one to have spoken about how far Aubameyang can go, with Arsenal teammate Aaron Ramsey heaping praise upon the forward.

The Welsh international went as far as to compare Aubameyang to Arsenal legend Thierry Henry due to the manner in which he plays and scores.

“[His goal v Spurs] was unbelievable but he does that in training all the time,” Ramsey said.

“He just eases the ball into the corners but with pace as well.

“It reminds me of Thierry Henry’s finishes, so he has that in the locker. He’s been fabulous for us.”

Aubameyang has also compared himself to Henry upon first joining Arsenal, saying: “The club have such a big history, and they had great players like Thierry Henry, so it’s an example for us strikers.

“He was fast, and he scored a lot of goals. So it’s really an example. I think I have to work a lot to be like him, but I will do. I’m a fast player and I score goals too, like Henry a little bit.”

Arsenal next play Huddersfield at home on Saturday before hosting Qarabag in the Europa League the following Thursday.
