Raheem Sterling explains his love of Neymar

Raheem Sterling has revealed he is a fan of Paris Saint-German’s Neymar, in particular praising his “winner’s mentality”.

The 26 year-old Brazilian has frequently courted controversy for his apparent eagerness to go to ground, including during PSG’s 2-1 defeat of Liverpool in mid-week. This left the latter’s Champions League hopes dangling by a thread, after Neymar scored the winning goal. (via Goal)

This led Liverpool left-back Andy Robertson to lament PSG’s “play-acting” and Neymar’s “falling”.

However, Sterling, the 23 year-old Man City (and former Liverpool) player preferred to focus on what he considered the forward’s more commendable traits.

“I like watching Paris Saint-Germain. What I really like about Neymar is every time he loses the ball, or tries something, he goes again. He doesn’t get disheartened. He has that winner’s mentality,” he said of the world’s most expensive player.

Directly referencing the game against his former club, he continued the praise by saying, “you’ve got the ball at the edge of his box, and he’s straight at you, trying to win the ball. He does do a lot of tricks but he does his tricks at the right time, for instance at the end of the game, the flick over the head, the rainbow [against Xherdan Shaqiri].”

Ironically enough, in the same interview with The Times, he addressed the furore over his own tricks last month, towards the end of November’s victory against rivals Manchester United.

Neymar on top 

It was in this game that Neymar scored his 31^st Champions League goal. This saw him overtake Brazilian legend Kaka as the country’s top goalscorer in the competition.

Whilst the move itself was highly controversial, Neymar has (as widely expected) flourished in France’s top league. So far this season, he has scored 10 goals and garnered five assists in the Ligue 1, whilst adding four more goals to his Champions League tally.

Paris St. Germain travel to Serbia for their next Champions League game against Red Star Belgrade on 11/12.
