UEL2: Uefa announce new European club competition

Uefa have announced that they intend to create a new European competition that will be launched in 2021.

The competition will involve 32 teams from across Europe and will take on a similar format to both the Champions League and Europa League tournaments.

With the plans briefly outlined via a member of the Uefa governing body, the new European competition is currently under the working title of “UEL2”, abbreviated from Uefa European League 2.

The competition itself – as stated above – with 32 teams will see those involved split into eight separate groups of four. The teams will then follow the traditional route towards the final of the competition via the round of 16, quarter-finals and semi-finals.

In a statement, UEFA President Aleksander ÄŒeferin said (via the Mirror): “The new UEFA club competition makes UEFA’s club competitions more inclusive than ever before.

“There will be more matches for more clubs, with more associations represented in the group stages. This competition was borne out of ongoing dialogue with clubs through the European Club Association.”

The new European adventure will offer one Premier League club the chance to participate with various other teams from around the continent.

The winners of the competition will then be guaranteed a place in the Europa League the following domestic campaign.

In an already hectic domestic schedule, “UEL2” games will take place on Thursdays with some 3.30pm kick-offs.
