Barcelona confirm £XXm buy-out clause has been activated ahead of schedule

Barcelona have confirmed that Brazilian midfielder Paulinho’s buy-out clause has been activated early by Chinese outfit Guangzhou Evergrande.

The 30-year-old re-signed with Guangzhou at the beginning of the season with a mandatory purchase option included, which the Chinese Super League side have decided to meet.

Barcelona and Guangzhou’s battle for Paulinho: What you need to know…

  1. Paulinho first signed for Guangzhou in 2015, leaving Tottenham Hotspur for a transfer fee of £9.9 million.
  2. Just over two years later, the Brazilian moved to Barcelona after the La Liga outfit matched his release clause of €40 million.
  3. After just one season in La Liga – where Paulinho won both La Liga and the Copa del Rey – he returned to China on a one-year loan.
  4. The loan agreement included a buy-out clause of £38 million which has been matched.
  5. Guangzhou have activated the buy-out clause

The reigning La Liga champions confirmed the news via an official statement that was released on their club website.

The statement translates to: “The Board of Directors has been informed that Guangzhou Evergrande has already made the purchase clause of the player Paulinho effective, in accordance with the agreement signed last July, after a transfer period.

“The Board expressed its satisfaction with the final result of this operation, which has been very beneficial for all parties.”

Paulinho in the middle

After just one season in Spain, Barcelona confirmed in the summer that the latest Paulinho transfer involving Guangzhou Evergrande would see the midfielder return to China on a one-year loan.

The statement on Barcelona’s official website initially read: “FC Barcelona and Guangzhou Evergrande have reached an agreement for the loan transfer of Paulinho Bezerra for one season, with a mandatory purchase option for the Chinese club.”

The player’s move to Barcelona was seen as a bizarre one but Paulinho found success in Spain, finishing as the club’s third highest goalscorer (9) behind Lionel Messi (34) and Luis Suarez (25).

Across his two spells in the Chinese Super League, Paulinho has blossomed to life in the east, already helping his side win a number of titles and honours including two Chinese Super League’s, Chinese FA Cup, two Chinese FA Super Cup’s and the AFC Champions League.
