Chelsea boss Sarri delivers frank verdict on Hazard's leadership skills

Chelsea manager Maurizio Sarri believes that club star Eden Hazard is more of an “individual than a leader”.

The Blues lost out 2-0 away to Arsenal last weekend, with Sarri’s side underperforming yet again as they compete for a top-four finish.

Does Hazard inspire his teammates? Here is what you need to know…

  1. Hazard joined the club in 2012 from Ligue 1 side Lille for a transfer fee of £32 million.
  2. Since then, he has established himself as one of the most recognisable and talented playmakers in Europe.
  3. The Belgium international has made 328 appearances in all competitions for Chelsea, scoring 101 goals.
  4. Hazard started this season off in style but has slowly had less of an effect on Chelsea’s performances.
  5. He has scored 10 goals in 22 Premier League games so far this campaign.

The Blues have lost to both Arsenal and Tottenham – in the EFL Cup – in recent weeks and Sarri has made it clear that he is not happy with the attitude of the Chelsea squad.

The former Napoli coach – who took over at Stamford Bridge this summer following the departure of former boss Antonio Conte – believes that although Hazard has undoubted quality, he is not the natural leader that his side need.

Speaking to reporters (via Goal) Sarri said: “He’s more of an individual player than a leader. He’s very important for us, of course, because he’s a great player. He can win a match in two minutes, sometimes one minute.

“He is one of the best in the world, but at this moment he is not a leader.”

“Eden doesn’t know if he’s staying”

Despite Sarri’s claims that Hazard doesn’t have the attributes of being a leader within the Chelsea set-up, there is no denying that the 28-year-old is a fantastic player to have in west London.

However, with less than 18 months left to run on his contract, Chelsea are still unsure whether Hazard will be their player for too much longer. Real Madrid have shown strong interest in Hazard, with the player admitting that he would be tempted by a move to Spain in the near future.

Sarri believes that the player has yet to make his mind up and is adamant that he doesn’t really know too much about the decision Hazard will make.

“No, no news,” the Italian coach said of Hazard’s future.

“I know very well that he is discussing with the club, but I don’t know anything else at the moment.

“I think that he has not decided yet if he wants to stay here or if he wants a new experience in another club. I don’t know exactly the situation, but I think that Eden, at the moment, doesn’t know the final choice.”
