Sevilla director of football Joaquin Caparros has said publicly the La Liga club is interested in signing Chelsea striker Alvaro Morata.
Caparros suggested Morata, who is said to be lacking confidence in West London, is keen on the move but admits a deal could be “very, very complicated” due to Chelsea being tough negotiators.
Does Morata need to leave Chelsea? Five things to know…
- Morata started brilliantly at Chelsea after joining from Real Madrid but finished his debut Premier League season with just 11 goals.
- Antonio Conte signed Olivier Giroud from Arsenal in January last year to provide competition but the later has scored just one top-flight goals this season.
- Morata appeared to start the new season as Maurizio’s Sarri’s first-choice striker ahead of Giroud.
- However, he has scored just five times in 16 Premier League appearances and Sarri has often resorted to playing Eden Hazard through the middle.
- Morata may need to leave for more regular football and rumours began to circulate after he missed Tuesday’s trip to Tottenham with a minor injury.
The Telegraph claims Morata will be allowed to leave Stamford Bridge this month if a replacement is signed before the end of January.
And Caparros has admitted he would like to take Morata to Sevilla.
“It is true that we have an interest in this player [Morata], but it is a very, very complicated operation,” Caparros told the club’s official media channel.
“The player may want to come here over other options, but it is very complicated. Chelsea are a club who are very difficult to negotiate [with].”
Could Diego Costa play a role in Morata’s exit?
Peter Crouch, who currently plays for Stoke City, called upon Chelsea to re-sign former striker Diego Costa, who joined Atletico Madrid just last summer.
“Diego Costa would absolutely transform Chelsea’s fortunes and, if it was down to me, I’d break the bank to re-sign him,” Crouch wrote of the Spanish striker, who is currently sidelined following foot surgery.
The Telegraph also claims Atletico could enter the race to sign Morata this month, favouring a loan deal for the 26-year-old.
If that happens, Costa could conceivably become surplus to requirements in the Spanish capital. However, Chelsea may not be keen to re-sign a player who has scored just four goals across all competitions this season and are heavily linked with AC Milan loanee Gonzalo Higuain and Bournemouth’s top-scorer, Callum Wilson.
Instead, Costa and Morata could be lining up alongside one another in Spain during the second half of the season, if reports are to be believed.
