Jose Mourinho has hit out at the younger generation of managers who seem to be more focused on style of play rather than winning trophies.

Mourinho was criticised for his style during his tenure at Old Trafford, with many fans believing his tactics were diametrically at odds with the attacking panache of former manager Sir Alex Ferguson.

  1. Mourinho was appointed Man Utd manager in 2016 but was sacked last month after just two-and-a-half years at the club.
  2. The former Chelsea boss has since rejected rumours of a return to former club Benfica, stating he has no “intention of coming back to work in Portugal”.
  3. However, Mourinho has recently opened the door on a return to manage Real Madrid.
  4. La Liga chief Javier Tebas has also welcomed Mourinho’s return to the division.
  5. It is not yet clear where Mourinho will end up but he insists he “belongs to top-level football”.

Caretaker boss Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has overseen six wins out of a possible six matches since being installed into the hot seat, playing a more attacking style in the process, which has led to further questions about Mourinho’s tenure.

However, the former Real Madrid and Inter Milan boss has hit out at the supposed negative image surrounding his tactics, instead telling people to judge him on the trophies he has won.

“One thing is image, another thing is communication, another thing is good structure behind, another thing is to win and get results,” he said on BeIN SPORTS, as reported by Sky Sports.

“It is very easy to play well and not win, it is very easy to be behind a certain idea of a certain football without results.

“The people that win and the people that win consistently – because you can win isolated and then disappear – has obviously a different idea about that.

“If you speak about (Pep) Guardiola, (Carlo) Ancelotti, about one where obviously I belong, that have a career of victories for a long, long period, where are the young ones with a real impact in terms of results? Where are they?”

Mourinho only signed a contract extension in January 2018, but cracks began to emerge this term after relations appeared to break down with Paul Pogba and chief executive Ed Woodward.

Despite this, the 55-year-old has backed his achievements at the club, believing finishing as runners-up to rivals Man City last season ranks among his very best honours in football management.

He added: “I consider one of the best jobs of my career [was] to finish second with Manchester United in the Premier League, you say ‘this guy is crazy, he’s won 25 titles and he’s saying that the second position was one of his best achievements in football’.”

Were Mourinho’s comments aimed at Pochettino?

Since Mourinho left United, Spurs manager Mauricio Pochettino has been hotly-tipped to step in and take the reins when the current season reaches its conclusion.

The highly-coveted Argentinian has been praised for the aesthetically pleasing brand of football he espouses in north London, as well as his ability to nurture and develop young talent. As such, the 46-year-old has received widespread adulation, but is yet to win silverware during his managerial career.

This has led many to believe that Mourinho’s comments about young managers who appear to be more focused on style rather than silverware, is a dig at Pochettino.
