Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp has refused to completely rule out making new signings in January, amid reports linking the club with a left-back.
The Reds are currently unbeaten at the top of the Premier League after 20 games and look capable of winning their first league title in 29 years.
Do Liverpool need another left-back? Five key things to know…
- Liverpool are unbeaten in the Premier League this season (W17, D3).
- The Reds are currently seven points clear of second-placed Manchester City and favourites to win the title.
- Liverpool are said to be considering signing a new left-back in January to act as back-up to Andy Robertson.
- Current second-choice Alberto Moreno sees his contract expire next summer and has spoken publicly about leaving.
- Robertson has started all but two league games this season and has been subbed off only twice.
As with many a title-winning team, Liverpool’s good start to the season has been helped by a lack of injuries to key players, ensuring Klopp regularly has his strongest XI to choose from.
But, despite conceding just eight goals in 20 games, left-back has been highlighted as a possible weak point for Liverpool in terms of depth.
Robertson has done a fantastic job there this season, but should the Scotsman fall to injury, Klopp would be left to rely on the unfavoured Alberto Moreno or else play James Milner out of position at left-back once more.
Klopp has admitted he will only look to strengthen his squad if required to do so, suggesting serious injuries could be one factor that forces Liverpool into the winter transfer market.
“I keep the door open because if something happens we need to have a look,” he said this week at a press conference.
“I’m very happy with what I’ve got, but you don’t know.
“That’s why I always keep the door open, in case something happens. We have a lot of games coming up and as long as we can react, it’s all good. If something dramatically changes, we’ll look.
“If nothing happens, we will not do anything.”
Liverpool move on the cards for Bristol City starlet?
One left-back Liverpool have been linked with by the Daily Mail is Bristol City’s Lloyd Kelly.
The 20-year-old has played 22 times for Bristol City in the Championship this season, demonstrating his versatility at both left-back and centre-half, scoring once.
Kelly signed a new three-year deal with the Robins in the summer, with the possibility of a further year being added on, potentially keeping him at the club until 2022.
Bristol City manager Lee Johnson has spoken highly of the 20-year-old throughout the season so far, backing Kelly to hit the heights of football.
“He’s certainly got all the tools,” Johnson said in August, according to the Bristol Post.
“He’s 6ft3, he’s got lovely agility. He’s a Rolls Royce of a player when it comes to moving and he’s a great technical player. The challenge for him will be can he handle the environment and the intensity of the Championship.
“We know that he’s got all the attributes and I believe that he can go to the very, very top if his attitude stays good. And I have to say that it is outstanding. If he continues on that path he’ll definitely have a chance.”
Kelly has made two appearances for England at U21 level, form whom he debuted in November 2018 when he started a 2-1 win over Italy.
