Strasbourg midfielder Anthony Goncalves has told Neymar “don’t go blubbering” after the Paris Saint-Germain star broke his metatarsal on Wednesday night.
Neymar was on the end of multiple heavy tackles and left the pitch in tears during PSG’s 2-0 victory over Strasbourg in the Coupe de France.
How did Neymar break his metatarsal? Five key things to know…
- Neymar often receives rough treatment from opponents but has been accused of diving as well as exaggerating fouls throughout his career.
- Moataz Zemzemi fouled Neymar three times in a matter of seconds on Wednesday – one of the fouls led to Neymar breaking his metatarsal.
- The Brazilian flamboyantly flicked the ball over the head of Zemzemi before succumbing to his injury and leaving the pitch in tears.
- Goncalves has criticised Neymar for “blubbering” but PSG boss Thomas Tuchel defended his player.
- Neymar suffered the same injury last February and missed the remainder of the 2017/18 season.
Following his injury, the Brazilian will now have an anxious wait as club doctors determine how long he will be sidelined for, though he is a major doubt for the forthcoming Champions League matches against Manchester United.
Neymar received heavy criticism at last year’s World Cup after reacting dramatically to a challenge from Miguel Layun during Brazil’s 2-0 win over Mexico.
And Strasbourg’s Goncalves believes the forward shouldn’t complain when the opposition does everything possible to prevent him from making an impact.
“It’s Neymar’s style, but don’t come and complain when you get kicked,” Goncalves said.
“He is a great player, I respect him. He can enjoy himself but don’t come blubbering afterwards.”
Managers disagree on Neymar treatment
After the game, PSG manager Thomas Tuchel and Strasbourg coach Thierry Laurey disagreed on the treatment of Neymar.
Tuchel accused the referee of failing to stop the Strasbourg players from targeting Neymar, while Laurey insisted there was no malicious intent on the part of his players.
“It was a situation where he was fouled three times, one after the other. The referee didn’t give anything. He twisted his foot,” Tuchel said.
Laurey contended: “There are moments when you have to play tough, it’s as simple as that.
“There are moments when, if you go over the limit a little bit, you have to expect that you are going to get a kick or two.
“I didn’t ask my players to go and kick Neymar, but I understand why the players had had enough of someone who was looking to tease and taunt them a bit.”
