Pochettino rules out Spurs move for striker despite Sir Alex's seal of approval

Giuseppe Rossi

Mauricio Pochetttino has ruled out a Spurs move for Italian striker Giuseppe Rossi.

Rossi is currently a free agent and training with former club Manchester United to keep up his fitness, while Spurs will be without Harry Kane and Heung-Min Son for a number of fixtures though injury and international duties respectively.

Is Giuseppe Rossi returning to the Premier League? Five key things to know…

  1. Giuseppe Rossi scored four goals in 14 appearances as a youngster for Man Utd between 2004 and 2006.
  2. Since then, Rossi has played for various clubs in England, Italy and Spain, scoring 128 goals during his club career.
  3. The 31-year-old was released by Genoa recently and has been training with Man Utd to keep fit.
  4. Despite impressing in training, Solskjaer has ruled out a move for Rossi.
  5. Mauricio Pochettino has also ruled out a move for the 30-time Italy international, despite being without Harry Kane and Heung-Min Son for the foreseeable future.

This has left Pochettino incredibly short of attacking options, with Fernando Llorente the club’s only recognised striker, but the Argentine has insisted the club are not considering a move for Rossi.

Asked about speculation the 31-year-old could be a solution to the striker crisis, Pochettino said via Sky Sports: “There are many names that appear in every transfer window.

“I think he is another name to add on the list but it is only a rumour. We have not considered him.

“It’s a rumour like another but if you ask me, I think no, it’s not a possibility.”

Tottenham travel to Fulham on Sunday.

Rossi impressing Sir Alex Ferguson in training

Despite not being on Pochettino’s radar, Rossi has been performing well in training with Man United, according to Ole Gunnar Solskjaer.

In fact, Rossi has been impressing so much so that even Sir Alex Ferguson’s head has been turned.

“He scored a fantastic goal yesterday [Saturday] in training,” Solskjaer said. “The gaffer [Sir Alex Ferguson] turned around and said ‘what about that son?’

“He looks sharp, he’s looking for a club so Giuseppe is probably going to stay with us for another week, unless someone takes him.”

Despite impressing Manchester United’s most successful manager of all time, Solskjaer insisted the club are not planning to sign Rossi and are simply helping a former player maintain his fitness.

“We’re not going to sign Giuseppe I think, no, but he’s trained well with us,” the Norwegian added.

“It’s a bit of us helping him to get fit before his next move, so if there are any takers you should be quick!”
