Solskjaer reveals which Man Utd player is scoring most in training

Manchester United interim manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer says there is still a place for Romelu Lukaku in his team.

The 25-year-old Belgian marksman has been a peripheral figure under Solskjaer since the Red Devils legend took over from Jose Mourinho.

Does Solskjaer not rate Lukaku? Five things to know…

  1. Lukaku started the 2018/19 campaign well with four Premier League goals in United’s opening five matches.
  2. However, the Belgian’s form started to dip, and he was dropped by Mourinho.
  3. Solskjaer left Lukaku out of his opening two matches in charge
  4. He’s since been a substitute in United’s following three league games but did score in two of those.
  5. Neville named Lukaku as one of three United players who may be unsuitable for Solskjaer’s playing style.

Solskjaer, who played an instrumental role in United winning their second-ever European Cup in 1999, has opted for Marcus Rashford to lead the line so far.

However, with plenty of games left this season, the Norwegian coach has reassured Lukaku, who is impressing in training, of playing time even if his attacking options are plenty. And if anyone knows the merits of patience, it’s Solskjaer.

“I used to be one of four strikers when we played with two. Now we have six forwards and we play with three,” he told reporters.

“There are enough games. It is about taking your chances when you get them.”

Solskjaer added: “[Lukaku] is a big part of the squad. No-one is scoring as many as Romelu in training.”

Can Solskjaer keep up his record winning start?

The football United are playing now compared to that which was witnessed during Mourinho’s final months is like night and day.

Solskjaer, whose previous experience of management in English football was a disappointing spell at Cardiff City, presently boasts a 100% record after six matches in charge of the 20-time champions.

Five of those have come in the Premier League, including a 1-0 away win at high-flying Tottenham Hotspur, with the other being a routine 2-0 FA Cup 3rd round triumph over struggling Championship outfit Reading.

The recent victory at Spurs expense saw the former ‘baby-faced assassin’ surpass the club’s legendary manager Sir Matt Busby when it came to most consecutive wins to start a managerial career at Old Trafford.

Busby, who forged the famed ‘Busby Babes’ before leading United to their first European Cup in 1968, began with five wins a feat 12 men that followed – including the club’s most decorated boss Sir Alex Ferguson – couldn’t manage.

Solskjaer, having reinstated the Red Devils joy de vivre, can extend his record when Brighton & Hove Albion visit the Theatre of Dreams on Saturday afternoon.
