Every England player rated as Rose stars in narrow win over Switzerland

Following their Uefa Nations League defeat to Spain at Wembley on Saturday, England took on Switzerland in a friendly at Leicester’s King Power Stadium tonight.

The first 45 minutes were something of an anti-climax, with the two sides struggling to create any meaningful chances – Xherdan Shaqiri came closest hitting the post after capitalising on sloppy play from England.

Meanwhile, slow, casual play hindered England’s ability to progress from the back and stretch the Swiss defence.

The second half was a marked improvement from England, who came out and looked much more assured with the ball.

The Three Lions upped their tempo and were rewarded with a goal in the 54th minute when Marcus Rashford volleyed home Kyle Walker’s deep cross to put England 1-0 up.

That is how it remained as England extended their unbeaten run against Switzerland to 31 years.

Here is how every England player performed in the Three Lion’s first visit to Leicester since 2003.

Jack Butland – 6 – A couple of decent saves, even if they were ones Butland would be expected to make. However, his play on the ball was worryingly sloppy in the first half and landed England in trouble on a couple of occaisions. Didn’t challenge Jordan Pickford’s status as no.1.

Trent Alexander-Arnold – 7 – Continues to put in performances beyond his 19-years-of-age. Confident and assured on the ball, the only slight mark on his record tonight was in the first half where he was caught out of position a couple of times.

Danny Rose – 9 – England’s main creative outlet throughout the game, caused Stephan Lichtsteiner problems down the Three Lions’ left wing all night and created numerous chances. Lichtsteiner will hope he doesn’t have to Rose him again when the North London derby comes around.

Kyle Walker – 7  – An erratic first half where Walker failed to use his pace and vision to cover the rest of the England defence. Improved in the second half and delivered a great ball for Marcus Rashford’s goal.

James Tarkowski – 5 – Recovered well at times. However, he only had to recover because he consistently allowed himself to be dragged out of England’s back line.

Harry Maguire – 7 – Was England’s best starting centre-back tonight. Generally strong in possession and solid in the challenge, read the play very well.

Eric Dier – 6 – Was tidy with the ball and put in a fair amount of running to break up Swiss play. Blazed a decent chance over the bar in the second half.

Fabian Delph – 6 – Working under Pep Guardiola seems to have tightened up Delph’s passing and the Man City utility man worked hard tonight before being substituted after 68 minutes.

Ruben Loftus-Cheek – 7 – Looked creative in possession and his physical presence gave him the upper-hand in a lot of battles in the midfield. Will be disappointed to have been brought off just after the hour mark.

Danny Welbeck – 4 – Wasteful with the ball and his touch was characteristically bad. His goal record for England masks a series of below-par performances for the Three Lions.

Marcus Rashford – 8 – Watched Kyle Walker’s cross with eagle eyes before guiding the volley home from close range to put England 1-0 up. Rashford was England’s best attacker tonight with his pace and driving runs causing Switzerland problems throughout.

Substitutes: 

John Stones (For James Tarkowski 61) – 7 – A brilliant block to deny Shaqiri shortly after coming on. Had a couple of hairy moments but generally very solid.

Jesse Lingard (For Ruben Loftus-Cheek 61) – 6 – Never really got into the game. Didn’t do a great deal wrong but didn’t influence the game as he so often can.

Harry Kane (For Danny Welbeck 61) – 5 – Was given a good 30 minutes or so to try and regain some sharpness but couldn’t get up to the pace of the game, losing possession on a few occasions.

Jordan Henderson (For Delph 68) – 6 – Tidy with the ball as he helped England rotate possession in the Switzerland half. Also provided a good screen in front of England’s back three.

Kieran Trippier (For Alexander-Arnold 79) – 6 – His technique with the ball is a joy to watch. Didn’t really have enough time to make any meaningful contributions.

Ben Chilwell (For Danny Rose 79) – 6 – Great reception from the Leicester contingent of the crowd as Chilwell made his international debut. Didn’t have much time to impose himself but was solid when called into action.
