Every player rated as West Ham beat Everton 3-1 for first Premier League win of the season

West Ham United got their first win of their Premier League season after convincingly defeating a poor Everton side 3-1 at Goodison Park this afternoon.

West Ham got off to a perfect start and were ahead after just 11 minutes thanks to Andriy Yarmolenko’s first goal for the club from just yards out. Everton struggled to get a hold of the match and 20 minutes later it was 2-0, thanks to Yarmolenko once again.

The Toffees got themselves back into the match courtesy of a goal from Gylfi Sigurdsson just before half-time.

Into the second half and with Everton’s early dominance, it was West Ham who got the next goal, with Marko Arnautovic getting his name on the scoresheet this time, putting the Hammers 3-1 to the good.

Everton missed a glorious chance, later on, to drag themselves back into the match but they didn’t deserve anything this afternoon and that is exactly what they got. West Ham boss Manuel Pellegrini will be delighted with his side’s performance whereas Marco Silva will be bemused by the lack of quality his side produced.

Here are the player rankings from this afternoon.

Everton

Jordan Pickford – 5 – England’s number one couldn’t do much about Yarmolenko’s finish for his first goal but his poor pass led to his second and certainly didn’t show off the talent we all know Pickford has. Letting in three goals will have annoyed Pickford beyond all reason.

Jonjoe Kenny – 5 – The talented youngster stepped in for the injured Seamus Coleman. A fine assist for Sigurdsson in the last moments of the opening 45 minutes didn’t make up for the vulnerability he showed today, looking hesitant to get on the ball when needed. Some great crosses but not enough defensive stability.

Mason Holgate – 4 – Thrust into the centre of Everton’s defence, Holgate struggled to contain the movement of West Ham’s frontmen.

Kurt Zouma – 4 – The Chelsea loanee is yet to prove he is worth putting in the heart of the Everton defence, let alone the Chelsea backline. His passing was decent but his positioning lacked. Both Zouma and Holgate as a centre-back partnership doesn’t look like working effectively anytime soon.

Lucas Digne – 4 – The former Barcelona man hit a shot high and wide within minutes and didn’t do too much else, to be honest. More is expected of the talented full-back but today, nothing really stands out in a good way regarding Digne’s performance, all while Leighton Baines was sat on the bench.

Idrissa Gueye – 5 – Often providing impressive performances, today was not one of those days. Along with Schneiderlin, Gueye couldn’t cope with the Hammers midfield and was often left out of position or losing possession.

Morgan Schneiderlin – 4 – A big chance for Schneiderlin to impress the Goodison Park faithful but he failed to show any real dominance in the Everton midfield. He looked shaky in possession and an error in the first half could have helped West Ham double their lead. He was substituted in the 44th minute. Silva seemingly, couldn’t even wait for half-time.

Theo Walcott – 4 – Occupying the right side of Everton’s attack, the most memorable piece of play was when Masuaka’s boot made its way down his body. Poor. Subbed.

Gylfi Sigurdsson – 6 – Everton’s record signing and today club captain, Sigurdsson scored a fantastic header just before half-time to bring Everton back into the match. In line with the penalty spot, the Icelandic international powered home his header to cover over a poor Everton first half. Decent movement today but lacked any teammates who were anywhere near his quality.

Dominic Calvert-Lewin – 5 – Another talented youngster for Silva to deploy, today was a chance for Calvert-Lewin to run at Pablo Zabaleta but the Englishman rarely tested any of the Hammers back line with the ability we know he has. Booked.

Cenk Tosun – 4 – Tosun missed a great chance from just six yards out, aiming his free header straight into the arms of Fabianski. Another chance for Tosun to get on the scoresheet but his weak shot was well parried. The striker is clearly lacking in confidence at present. Subbed.

Substitutions

Bernard (44th min) – 5 – Everton looked far more dangerous and adventurous once Bernard stepped onto the pitch. Not afraid of taking men on, Bernard’s pace and direct approach caused the Hammers far more problems at the back than what had occurred before he entered the match. Booked.

Oumar Niasse (69th min) – 4 – Missed an absolute sitter. Unmarked, six yards out, far more quality needed.

Ademola Lookman (77th min) – 5 – The talented winger didn’t have much time to affect the match as Everton’s attacking threat weakened as the game went on.

West Ham United

Lukasz Fabianski – 6 – The former Swan didn’t have too much to do in the first half, a weak Tosun header and shot aside. He couldn’t do much about Sigurdsson’s header which came from some poor marking rather than ineffective goalkeeping.

Pablo Zabaleta – 5 – His experience hasn’t exactly aided West Ham’s form and his lack of pace showed at times. However, he didn’t face too much of a threat from a poor Everton side who didn’t utilise their pace advantage enough against the Argentinian. Booked.

Fabian Balbuena – 5 – The Paraguayan international let Sigurdsson run free moments before the half-time whistle which resulted in the Hammers losing their clean sheet.

Issa Diop – 6 – A tough start to life in the Premier League for Diop, the defender wasn’t tested enough to enforce him into a stellar performance. However, he didn’t look out of place and didn’t do anything to suggest he will be leaving the starting eleven anytime soon.

Arthur Masuaku – 6 – Well established as West Ham’s go-to left-back, Masuaku was given a yellow card for a nasty high boot on Theo Walcott in the first half.

Declan Rice – 7 – Versatile youngster Rice was entrusted by his manager to cover the West Ham defence this afternoon. Some neat touches, excellent passing range, tough tackles, and the intelligence to balance when to push forward and when to stay back, Rice is turning into an important player for the Hammers. Booked.

Pedro Obiang – 8 – Playing ahead of Rice was Obiang, with the 26-year-old Spanish midfielder lofting a defensive splitting pass forward to Arnautovic for the opening goal. He nabbed himself another assist, this time for Arnautovic in the second half, showcasing his ability to effectively play in the final third as well as in his own half.

Felipe Anderson – 6 – Big things are expected of summer signing Anderson and today we saw short glimpses of what could be. Neat on the ball, confidence heading forwards, Anderson wasn’t as effective as Yarmolenko but certainly helped the West Ham cause today, more than his last outing.

Mark Noble – 6 – Club captain Noble helped usher the Hammers midfield forward and back, providing excellent cover when needed. Subbed.

Andriy Yarmolenko – 9 – The Hammers were waiting for Yarmolenko to produce the goods and, man, did he just do that. It took just 11 minutes for the tricky playmaker to put the ball in the back of the net. Fed by Arnautovic, the Ukrainian couldn’t miss from yards out and he rapidly got his first goal in a West Ham shirt. His second goal was a fantastic strike, cutting inside on his right foot just inside the Everton box and he bent the ball past the reaching gloves of Pickford. Best game for the club so far. Booked. Subbed.

Marko Arnautovic – 9 – Often West Ham’s star man, he turned provider for West Ham’s opening goal, opting to set his Yarmolenko up for his first goal rather than take a shot at goal himself. Into the second half, Arnautovic turned goalscorer after Obiang played the ball through, allowing the former Stoke City star to knock the ball under Pickford’s body. Both he and Yarmolenko troubled the Everton defence with their constant movement and intent today and showed that they can be a real force this season. Subbed.

Substitutions

Michail Antonio (64th min) – 5 – The Hammers forward had two half chances but failed to make a significant impact.

Carlos Sanchez (71st min) – 5 – A few decent tackles, blocks and passes.

Roberto Snodgrass (82nd min) – 5 – Little time for impact.
