Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp has revealed why Jordan Henderson started their game against Tottenham Hotspur on Saturday afternoon on the bench.
Henderson had started in Liverpool’s final game before the international break, a 2-1 win over Leicester City which saw the Reds extend their perfect start in the Premier League to four matches.
But prior to that, the England midfielder had to make do with substitute appears due to his late involvement in the World Cup with the Three Lions.
And now, with Henderson back on the bench, Klopp has given his reason for the decision, admitting their is an eye on the start of Liverpool’s Champions League campaign.
“I don’t think it makes sense in the moment to play him,” he told Sky Sports prior to Saturday’s match with Spurs.
“We’re still adapting to the intensity, Hendo needs his full physical strength. I’m sure he’ll have that today when he comes on and on Tuesday as well.”
Looking to go one better than their runners-up medals last season, Liverpool kick off a new Champions League campaign at home to French champions Paris Saint-Germain on Tuesday.
Henderson’s Liverpool career so far
Joining Liverpool in 2011 from Sunderland, Henderson as brought in to partner, and learn from, Steven Gerrard in the middle of the pitch.
When Gerrard left the club in 2015, Henderson would take over as club captain under Brendan Rodgers, something he has kept following Klopp’s arrival.
Prior to the match against Tottenham on Saturday, Henderson had made 284 appearances in all competitions for Liverpool, scoring 24 goals and recording 40 assists while also winning the 2012 League Cup.
