Real Madrid manager Julen Lopetegui is not a fan of La Liga’s planned United States fixtures, claiming it ‘corrupts the equality of the competition’.
After much speculation, La Liga signed a 15-year deal with Relevent Sports to play league fixtures in the US, the first of which is planned to be Girona v Barcelona in January.
However, the move has been met with a huge amount of opposition from many La Liga players, coaches and fans.
And Lopetegui is the latest to voice his disdain.
“All the teams should be play in the same grounds, that is why the league system is so effective and why it is fair and equal,” he told reporters (via Football Espana).
“I am not a supporter of the idea at all, for me it is not right and I believe it corrupts the equality of the competition.”
One thing Lopetegui will be happy about is his start to life at Real Madrid since controversially leaving the Spanish national team job just before the start of the 2018 World Cup.
Los Blancos sit joint-top of the table, winning all three of their games so far, scoring 10 and conceding just two goals so in the process.
The European Champions’ next game is a tough away test at Athletic Bilbao on Saturday, with Lopetegui understandably cautious about the fixture.
The 52-year-old added: “Athletic Club? We have a full squad available for the game and it will be a very difficult game for us, as it is for every club in the division.
“It is a very important game for us, we do not think about rotations for this and this is a game that must be met with the utmost importance.”
Real Madrid are currently on a six-game unbeaten run against the Basque club.
