Valencia winger Denis Cheryshev is the subject of a doping investigation, the World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA) have confirmed.
The Telegraph newspaper (via Football Espana) reported at the weekend that Cheryshev is being investigated by Spanish anti-doping authorities, having already been spoken to by their Russian counterparts. This news has now been verified by WADA.
The 27-year-old, who was only outscored by Harry Kane at this summer’s World Cup as hosts Russia reached the quarter-finals, was injected with “growth hormone” to speed up recovery from an injury in the run-up to the tournament, according to the player’s father.
Anyone found guilty of using growth hormone without a medical exemption could face a ban of up to four years.
The former Real Madrid player got the World Cup off to a flying start with a brace in the curtain-raiser against Saudi Arabia, the second of which was a sumptuous curling effort.
He then added to that tally in a 3-1 win against Egypt, before thrashing the ball past Danijel Subasic against Croatia to open the scoring.
However, Zlatko Dalic’s men had the last laugh, winning the contest 4-3 on penalties after a 2-2 draw.
Valencia take on Real Betis at the weekend, playing at home on Saturday in La Liga.
