We are now seven matches into the Premier League season and things are hotting up nicely.
As ever, there have been some players who have continued to produce consistent performances for their respective clubs and some surprise packages who have come in and shown their talents to the watchful eye of many a supporter.
However, with the allowance of a 25-man squad for each Premier League team, there are, of course, players who aren’t able to seal their place in their teams’ starting eleven and have been made to watch from the sidelines.
Likewise, there are some who have performed well and perhaps believe they are ready for a move to a ‘bigger club’. Here is a list of Premier League players who could and should be eyeing up a move in the winter transfer window.
Aaron Ramsey
The long-time Arsenal man is at a critical point in his footballing career. His contract will expire next summer and it has been reported that the club have withdrawn a contract offer that was made to the Welshman, leaving the midfielder in limbo about his future.
His ability is undoubtedly worthy of a place in a top side, but he has never reached the heights expected of him on a regular basis for the Gunners. His best season came back in 2013/14 when he scored 16 Premier League goals and assisted eight times and, since then, the 27-year-old has failed to convince the north London club to do their all to extend his stay at the Emirates.
Tom Heaton
One-time Burnley number one, Heaton’s injury last season saw him drop out of both the domestic and international scene with Nick Pope taking his place in both camps.
Injured once more this campaign – along with Pope – former England first-choice Joe Hart has stepped up and provided some very good performances for Sean Dyche’s men. With Pope aiming to return from injury at the end of the year, Heaton is likely to be the third choice and, at the age of 32, he may look to move on in search of minutes.
Paul Pogba
Pogba’s international career couldn’t be in a better position at present, after helping France to win the World Cup this summer. However, his relationship with Manchester United, or more specifically, Jose Mourinho is seemingly at an all-time low, with tensions clear to see.
With reported interest from Barcelona and Paris Saint-Germain, this one may depend on whether his boss is still at Old Trafford once the season hits January. One to keep an eye on.
Nathaniel Clyne
The talented right-back has had a torrid time with injuries across the last year and a bit, keeping him out of a highly developed Jurgen Klopp side as they aim to get back among the silverware.
With Trent Alexander-Arnold emerging as one of the most promising players in English football, Clyne’s return to fitness has seen him remain on the sidelines. His pace, experience and defensive ability would fit into most sides in the Premier League.
Ruben Loftus-Cheek
His form for Crystal Palace last season saw him earn a place in Gareth Southgate’s England squad for the World Cup in Russia. Since then, Loftus-Cheek has been limited to brief appearances for Chelsea under new manager Maurizio Sarri.
It is vital for his continued development that he plays week in, week out and if this isn’t a possibility in west London, perhaps a move back to south London with the Eagles is the best thing for all parties?
Victor Wanyama
The Kenyan has made 74 appearances in all competitions for Spurs since his move to the club in 2016. However, he has played just 51 minutes so far this season.
With the likes of Eric Dier, Mousa Dembele and Harry Winks all getting preferential treatment and with Spurs reportedly open to offers in the summer just gone, it may be time for Wanyama to move on and find some regular football elsewhere.
James Ward-Prowse
Southampton have been struggling on the pitch for at least 18 months now and yet Ward-Prowse still can’t get himself in the Saints side.
The 23-year-old was once labelled as one of the most promising stars in English football and was thrust into the St Mary’s side from an early age. 208 showings later, could his love affair with Southampton be close to an end?
Alberto Moreno
The forgotten Liverpool man was once the club’s go-to left-back but he has only played two 90 minute Premier League matches since November 2017.
Who would have thought that Hull City’s Andrew Robertson would be the man to keep Moreno out of the side and perhaps force him out of the club. The Scot looks set to remain as first choice, which could spell the end of the Spaniard’s time on Merseyside.
Phil Jagielka
Long-time Everton saviour Jagielka is another in a long line of players who have fallen victim to the inevitable curse of ageing, slowly edging him out of the Toffees’ starting eleven.
At 36-years of age, the former Sheffield United man may have to take a step down to the Championship, but perhaps a romantic reunion between Jagielka and Sheffield United could be the perfect answer?
Gary Cahill
Cahill has already spoken publically about how he may have to move on to find regular football. Having won two Premier League titles, the Champions League, Europa League, FA Cup and the Football League Cup, Cahill has earnt himself a dignified exit.
It is highly doubtful he will get the action he seeks at Stamford Bridge, so this transfer seems almost certain to occur in a few months time.
Miguel Britos
Yet to play this season and with just 12 Premier League matches last year, the 33-year-old may have run out of time at Vicarage Road.
His contract expires next summer and the likelihood of an extension being offered is extremely slim indeed.
Fraser Forster
124 games on the south coast and all things were going well for the former Celtic goalkeeper. However, injury dealt its cruel hand in the direction of Forster who lost his place in the side to Alex McCarthy.
The summer acquisition of Angus Gunn from Manchester City has only added to Forster’s problems and the England shot-stopper would be well-sought after, with his talents still worthy of a place in England’s top league.
Divock Origi
Since his £10 million transfer to Liverpool, the 23-year-old has failed to cement his place at the Anfield club and has twice been sent out on-loan, where he has failed to perform to the expectations needed to disrupt the club’s attacking hierarchy.
He has still made 77 appearances for the Reds, scoring 21 goals, so he has the ability to provide a decent scoring service for any new club that wants to take a chance.
Danny Drinkwater
One Premier League title under his belt after his fantastic role in Leicester City’s historic 2015/16 campaign, a big-money move to Chelsea followed but failed to provide him with a platform to build upon his impressive form.
Quickly dropping down the pecking order, Drinkwater is now at peak age so needs to find the right club to bring out the best of his abilities.
Fernando Llorente
One fantastic season at Swansea City saw him score 15 times in the Premier League, which was enough to convince Mauricio Pochettino to bring him to the capital.
However, in 33 matches, Llorente has only scored five goals, and with Harry Kane leading the way for Spurs, it may be best for both parties to part ways and admit that this match-up just wasn’t meant to be.
