Alvaro Morata turns fortunes around to score Sarri’s favourite Chelsea goal

Chelsea manager Maurizio Sarri says Alvaro Morata’s goal in the Blues’ 3-0 win over Southampton is his favourite goal since he took charge of the club.

Having started the season as the club’s first choice striker, Morata has since been benched at the expense of Olivier Giroud.

However, with two goals in his last two appearances and a call-up to the latest Spain squad, the former Real Madrid and Juventus striker may be set to regain his place as the focal point in Chelsea’s attack.

Morata’s goal against Southampton came in the closing stages of the match, with some neat interplay in the midfield resulting in Eden Hazard sliding an excellent pass through to the striker, who finished with a neat chip over Saints goalkeeper Alex McCarthy.

Sarri expressed his delight at the goal in his post-match press conference at St. Mary’s.

“We moved the ball very quick. I think one touch, maximum two touches and we arrived at the goal so easy. I think it’s my football.” the Chelsea boss said.

When asked if it was his favourite goal since taking over at Stamford Bridge, the 59-year old said: “Sure. Of course, because I can see my way of football in this situation.”

‘Sarri-ball’ in full flow at Chelsea

Morata’s goal in Chelsea’s latest victory was another example of the impressive transformation at the club since Sarri’s arrival in July.

The Blues find themselves joint top of the Premier League table going into the October international break and are still unbeaten in all competitions.

Many didn’t expect Chelsea to be able to compete for the league title this season, with Sarri given such little time to work with the squad in pre-season and implement his preferred philosophy, one which is a total contrast to previous manager Antonio Conte’s.

Sarri continues to play down his side’s chances of competing for the Premier League title this season and claims both Manchester City and Liverpool are a step ahead of his side as it stands.

But if Chelsea continue to develop at this rate then you wouldn’t bet against them being in the mix for the top spot towards the end of the season.
