Swedish centre-back Andreas Granqvist claims Manchester United have a concrete interest in signing him from Helsingborg.
Granqvist’s career has so far included spells with Wigan Athletic, Groningen, Genoa and Krasnodar, before the 33-year-old returned to hometown club Helsingborg in the summer.
The defender is still Sweden’s captain and scored two goals for his country at the World Cup this summer, leading them to the quarter-final’s before they were knocked out by England.
He was expected to see out his career in Sweden, but reports emerged last week suggesting that the centre-back was being targeted by Manchester United ahead of the January transfer window.
Speaking after his side’s latest victory over Falkenburg, the defender claimed that Jose Mourinho is indeed interested in signing him.
“There certainly is interest. There’s usually nothing in it when it’s in a newspaper,” Granqvist said.
“I don’t close any doors to anything. But it’s so far away and as long as there is nothing concrete, it’s mostly speculation. As I said at the start, I’m flattered even to be mentioned with such a big team as Manchester United.
“We’ll see, but there is certainly an interest, as it says in the media.
“Should there be a concrete offer in January, I’ll receive it and then Helsingborg will look at it. Right now, there isn’t one.”
Are United lining up a loan swoop for Granqvist?
It would be surprising to see United attempt to sign a player like Andreas Granqvist on a permanent basis, especially seen as they were said to be targeting the likes of Harry Maguire, Toby Alderweireld and Jerome Boating in the summer.
Jose Mourinho has made no secret of the fact that he’d like to add another centre-back to his squad, but would Granqvist be the correct solution at 33 years of age?
It could be that United are loaning up a loan deal similar to the one that saw Henrik Larsson join the club in January 2007. When asked if that was the case, Granqvist said:
“I don’t know if it’s a loan. As I’ve not had a concrete offer, it’s hard to speculate.”
