Anthony Martial denies tension with Man Utd boss Jose Mourinho

Manchester United forward Anthony Martial has poured cold water on suggestions of a rift between himself and Jose Mourinho.

Martial, 22, was instrumental as the Red Devils picked up a point during their visit to west London over the weekend, with the Frenchman bagging a brace in the 2-2 draw with Chelsea.

The match was only Martial’s fifth start of the season, and there have been continuous reports of a fractious relationship between the forward and Mourinho since the Portuguese took the reins at Old Trafford, but Martial insists he has always been on good terms with his manager.

“Things were not tense between us to begin with,” the 22-year-old said to reporters (via Goal).

“We have a player-coach relationship and I hope that we will continue like that and bring Manchester United as much as possible.”

Martial was infamously fined by Mourinho after he returned late to the club’s International Champions Cup tour of the United States over the summer as he attended the birth of his child.

Mourinho also publicly criticised Martial after the 3-1 defeat to West Ham earlier this season, with the forward then left out of the starting XI against Valencia in the club’s following match.

However, since then Martial has hit fine form, netting against Newcastle United during the 3-2 comeback against the Magpies a fortnight ago, and also the two goals against Chelsea on Saturday afternoon.

Martial eyeing Juventus upset

The Red Devils play host to Juventus on Tuesday night, with Mourinho looking to put some distance between his side and Valencia in Group H, as only three points separate them from the Spanish club.

Victory for United will see them leapfrog the Old Lady who have won their opening two matches, and Martial believes his side can take great confidence and belief from the draw against Chelsea, despite Ross Barkley’s late goal.

He added: “We were not doing well. However, we worked hard and this sort of match enabled us to show that we are a good team.

“We want to continue with another good game against Juventus on Tuesday.

“[The goals] have done me the world of good. However, ultimately, I am disappointed. We deserved to win but we shipped the goal in the last minute and it cost us.”

Man Utd lock horns with Juventus on Tuesday before turning their attention to a home fixture against Everton on Sunday.
