John Terry has announced his retirement from football amid rumours of his taking up a coaching role at Aston Villa.
After making 717 appearances and winning five Premier League titles, five FA Cups and a Champions League, among other honours, at Chelsea, the 37-year-old joined Aston Villa at the start of last season.

The 78-time England international captained Villa as they reached the playoff final last season ultimately losing 1-0 to Fulham.
Terry then left the club at the end of the season and, after a short time as a free agent, he has now taken to Instagram to announce his retirement.

The central defender posted a picture of himself holding the Premier League title aloft in front of Chelsea fans at Stamford Bridge, with a caption that read: “After 23 incredible years as a footballer, I have decided now is the right time to retire from playing.”
His retirement comes at a time when speculation is rife that he will be taking up a coaching role at Villa Park, with Thierry Henry rumoured to be the man to replace Steve Bruce as the club’s manager.

Standing as one of Chelsea’s most distinguished and decorated players of all time, Twitter has been full of reaction to Terry’s decision to call time on his playing career, with ex-teammate Nathan Ake posting his own message of gratitude.

As well as Ake, Chelsea fans have also been pouring their support onto social media, with some even calling Terry the ‘best defender’ they have seen.
