“I wanted to be like Ramos” – Yellow card king Felipe Melo

Palmeiras midfielder Felipe Melo has accepted that his role at the club will see him pick up a lot of yellow cards, but has also made a cheeky reference to Sergio Ramos.

The former-Brazilian international, who has played for the likes of Juventus, Inter Milan and Galatasaray in the past, picked up 11 yellow cards in just 19 league games for Palmeiras this season, with the latest coming in their 3-1 win over Cruzeiro on Sunday.

However, the 35-year-old is not worried about the number of cards he is picking up and is using Real Madrid and Spain defender Ramos as inspiration.

In an interview with the media after Sunday’s match (via Marca), Melo said: “I wanted to be like Sergio Ramos, who sees yellow, yellow, yellow, and then is champion of Champions and world champion.

“My role is that, I accept the criticism, analyse it and try to improve.”

Felipe Melo v Sergio Ramos – who is the real yellow card king?

If Felipe Melo is trying to emulate Sergio Ramos’ disciplinary record then he has gone way above and beyond this season.

In league matches, Melo’s 11 yellow cards have come at an average of 0.62 per 90 minutes compared to Ramos’ one at 0.14 per 90.

The Brazilian has also committed an average 1.76 fouls per 90 so far this season, while Ramos, famed for his robust approach, is significantly lower with 0.54.
