José Mourinho responds to reports of a return to Real Madrid

Manchester United manager Jose Mourinho has committed his future to the club amid reports linking him with a return to Real Madrid.

Mourinho managed Madrid between 2010 and 2013 leading Los Blancos to one La Liga title and the Copa del Rey before leaving the Santiago Bernabeu for former club Chelsea.

Current Madrid manager Julen Lopetegui’s job has come into doubt following a poor start to the season which sees them seventh in La Liga having lost three games already, adding to a defeat in the Uefa Super Cup to rivals Atletico Madrid and Champions League loss to CSKA Moscow.

Mourinho is one of the names to be linked with replacing Lopetegui, who has only been in charge of Madrid since the summer, but the United boss has pledged to see out his contract with the Red Devils.

“No, I’m happy here,” he told reporters in a pre-match press conference.

“I’m happy to see out my contract and I’d like to stay after my contract runs out.

“All I’m thinking about is Manchester United.”

United drew 2-2 at the weekend against Chelsea, losing their lead to a 96th-minute equaliser from Ross Barkley, to keep the Reds Devils off the pace and currently 10th after nine games.

The Red Devils next face Juventus in the Champions League on Tuesday, looking to take control of Group H, but will have to do so without Chilean forward Alexis Sanchez with Mourinho declaring unfit.

“The players you saw are the layer available nothing to hide and Alexis is out,” he added.

Real Madrid’s poor start to the season

With Zinedine Zidane leaving the club in the summer, Real Madrid have struggled to replicate the success they managed under the Frenchman.

Lopetegui was announced as his replacement, while still in charge of the Spanish national team, leading to a messy departure just days before the start of the World Cup.

And the decision is yet to come to fruition with Real Madrid struggling under Lopetegui so far, kicking off with a 4-2 defeat to Atletico Madrid in the Uefa Super Cup.

Five wins in six games across all competitions followed before a downturn in performances and results. A 0-0 draw with Atletico in the league was the first of three consecutive games in which Real failed to score including two 1-0 defeats to CSKA Moscow and Alaves respectively.

Then, last time out, Real lost 2-1 at home to Levante to heap more pressure on Lopetegui.
