Journalists envy Real Madrid footballers, says Marcelo

Brazilian left-back Marcelo has waded in on the mentality of sports journalists, arguing those that have critiqued Real Madrid after their dismal start to the season are envious as they can’t play the game.

Marcelo was talking to a reporter after the Spanish giants finally got back to winning ways having beaten Viktoria Plzen in the Champions League 2-1, with Karim Benzema and the left-back providing the goals.

And Marcelo, who has won four Champions Leagues with Los Blancos, has hit out at journalists for their criticism of his club side’s recent form.

“It’s hard when you don’t win, but you talk about a crisis like you want to hurt this squad,” he said in the mixed zone after the game, via Marca.

“All journalists try to hurt us, maybe it’s envy because you don’t know how to play football.”

The fullback was forced off before the final whistle with an injury, but insisted he was not feeling pain, saying: “I feel good now. I took a hard blow and referees have to see those things.”

The Brazil international also gave his opinion on the struggling Julen Lopetegui, who has largely failed to inspire much confidence in what has been a very poor start to life post-Ronaldo, with the Madrid club winning just one in their previous five in all competitions.

“In my view, he’s doing a great job,” Marcelo said, going on to say it would be “wonderful” if he stays in charge for this weekend’s Clasico match against Barcelona.
