Man Utd need to ‘take stock’ and stick with Mourinho – Giggs

Wales manager and Manchester United legend Ryan Giggs has defended under-fire manager Jose Mourinho, saying his former club should keep him on.

Contingents of the press and pundits have been baying for Mourinho’s blood in recent weeks after United suffered a series of disappointing results in the league, the Carabao Cup and in the Champions League.

The Daily Mirror even reported that Mourinho would be sacked after United’s game against Newcastle United regardless of the result.

After the first ten minutes of that game, in which United conceded two sloppy goals, the writing looked like it was on the wall for the Portuguese boss. But second-half goals from Juan Mata, Anthony Martial and Alexis Sanchez saved the Red Devils from the jaws of defeat and may just have extended Mourinho’s expensive stay at the Lowry Hotel until after the international break.

Giggs, 44, enjoyed a hugely successful career at United. He made more appearances for the club than any other player and became the most decorated player in English football history during the 24 years he played for the Old Trafford club.

During his time with the United, the Welshman only played under Sir Alex Ferguson and the Wales manager is adamant that Mourinho should keep his job despite a poor start to the season.

I believe he [Mourinho] should keep his job,” Giggs told the BBC.

“They’re going through a tough time at the moment, but change now then you’re in the same position in a year, two years, quite possibly.

Surprisingly, Giggs’ comments were echoed by fellow Class of 92 alumnus Paul Scholes, who has been a fervent critic of the Red Devils boss this season. “When you looked at the West Ham game last week, that looked like the biggest sign of players not wanting to play for Jose, but I would not sack him.” Scholes told ESPN FC.

During the international break, Mourinho has just over a fortnight to steady the ship at Old Trafford and mend some of the tensions that have spilt out of the training ground.

His position at the club will be under the spotlight when United return to action as they face a romping Chelsea side at Mourinho’s old stomping ground, followed by a crucial Champions League clash with Serie A champions Juventus at Old Trafford.
