Man Utd signing Fred reveals his four Premier League idols

Manchester United midfielder Fred has listed the four former Premier League players who helped draw him towards English football.

The Brazilian signed for Jose Mourinho’s side over the summer, moving from Ukrainian outfit Shakhtar Donetsk for £47 million. Upon his arrival, Jose Mourinho praised Fred for his “creative brain and passing vision.”

Since then, the 25-year-old has struggled to cement a regular place in the starting line-up. However, Fred has made five Premier League appearances for the Red Devils, scoring his first goal for the club against newly promoted Wolverhampton Wanderers in their 1-1 draw at Old Trafford.

Fred has revealed the former Premier League pros who were his idols growing up, admitting that United were not the only team he enjoyed watching play on television; Fred named two former stars from both his current club and north London side Arsenal as his top choices.

“I always watched a lot of English football. It has always been really strong,” he told United’s official club website.

“I used to watch United, Manchester City, Chelsea and Arsenal, when Gilberto Silva used to play there. I have many idols like Gilberto, Thierry Henry, Ryan Giggs, Paul Scholes – many great players that have been here as well.”

Thierry Henry, Arsenal’s all-time leading goalscorer, and Gilberto Silva were part of the last Gunners team to win the Premier League in 2003/04, when they went unbeaten to earn the moniker, The Invincibles.

Ryan Giggs and Paul Scholes are, respectively, the most and third-most prolific Manchester United players of all time in terms of appearances, winning copious league titles together; between them, they have 24 Premier League winners medals.

How has Fred fared at Man Utd so far?

As said above, Fred is yet to amaze the Old Trafford faithful since his arrival. However, United’s season hasn’t exactly gone to plan either.

With United struggling, Mourinho has not found a side to settle on and has chopped and changed his line-up to adjust to poor results, individual form and the inevitable injuries that occur throughout the campaign.

Although Fred has started five matches, he has only completed two full 90-minute matches so far as he adapts to life away from Ukrainian football.

United’s next fixture is against Chelsea on Saturday at Stamford Bridge, with the hosts enjoying an unbeaten start to life in the 2018/19 campaign. A win for Fred and co will help ease the pressure off United boss Mourinho a little heading into their busy winter schedule.
